The Db’s Offer MP3 Track To Benefit New Orleans Musicians Relief Fundings
On the heels of their first live shows in more than 20 years, The dB’s are offering their newly recorded, previously unreleased version of the Motown classic "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" to help raise money for the displaced musicians of New Orleans affected by Hurricane Katrina. Not one but two members of The dB’s have been made homeless by Katrina. Peter Holsapple and his family are fine, but their home is almost certainly beyond salvaging. Former member Jeff Beninato is also fine but had to evacuate; his second-floor apartment may or may not have escaped damage, he doesn’t know yet — and may not for a long time.
They don’t need immediate financial help, but many New Orleans musicians do. Jeff Beninato met with some great people at Chase Bank in Chicago and, in conjunction with New Orleans Director of Music Development Scott Aiges, has set up the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund. Donations to the fund will go directly toward getting struggling musical artists back on their feet. It will provide money for food and shelter to those without, and hopefully replace musical equipment that was lost.

In an unprecedented show of unity and support for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, nearly every single dollar raised at Monday night’s Dave Matthews Band benefit concert at Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre will go to aid those affected by the hurricane.
"We are thrilled to announce that over $ 1.5 million dollars will be donated to the Bama Works Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund," said Chuck Morris, President of Chuck Morris Presents. "The fund will be used to provide short term disaster relief to the affected Gulf Coast population, and long term assistance for rebuilding of communities."
"We are deeply grateful to The Neville Brothers, John Butler Trio and to everyone who supported this effort," said Dave Matthews Band. "We want to especially thank our fans for responding so generously to assist those affected by the hurricane."
Everyone involved in the concert including the band and their crew, the promoter, the City and County of Denver, all of the vendors, truck drivers, stage hands, security personnel, ushers, parking attendants, maintenance services, local police and fire, and many others donated their time to Monday night’s concert, cutting the overall expenses of the show to a bare minimum. As a result, the benefit raised over $ 1.5 million dollars for hurricane relief.

As this year’s VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE hones in on a new city (TBA), Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails–one of the headliners for the October 29-30 event–has reinforced his commitment to the event, a New Orleans tradition for the past six years.
The ambition of this year’s event has changed, as the Voodoo Music Experience and the Entertainment Industry Foundation have partnered to raise critically needed funds for those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Reznor, a former New Orleans resident who had maintained a recording studio in the city, stated today: "It means a lot to me that the Voodoo Music Experience is continuing on and I look forward to being a part of this amazing New Orleans tradition. It’s great that other cities have opened their doors to this year’s event, and the New Orleans spirit will definitely remain in the air–that’s something the floods cannot wash away. We are going to be part of the rebuilding process and we are asking the entire music community to join us."
Stephen Rehage, founder and independent producer of the annual VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE says, "I’m thankful to Trent for remaining committed to us as we transition this year’s event. As a former New Orleans resident, he understands the importance of rebuilding the local music community. Guitarist, trumpeter and bandleader Jeff Healey will host a "traditional jazz" benefit performance at his club in Toronto on Sunday afternoon October 2. With his Jazz Wizards in tow, Healey will welcome The Happy Pals – long the resident Saturday afternoon band at Grossman’s Tavern – as well as an intermission skiffle session from Mr. Rick & The Biscuits.
Other guests taking part will include New Orleans trumpet player Kevin Clarke (who is running a benefit the previous week at The Distillery), Donnie "Mr. Downchild" Walsh (who frequently sits in with both The Wizards and The Pals), and singers Terra Hazleton and Laura Hubert.
All proceeds will go to the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic. Said Healey: "Obviously, we are all touched by the plight of the city that has given us so much music. We want to do what we can to help New Orleans musicians bring their music back to their audiences at home and around the world."

Spectrasonics Releases "New Orleans Strut" Library To Benefit Hurricane Victims
Spectrasonics announced the release of the New Orleans Strut mini drum loop collection to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The library features 50 ALL NEW live grooves from seven world-class drummers. Moonlight Groove Highway is no more

According to the news section of KSAN tribute site Jive 95, Moonlight Groove Highway has been put on "hiatus" which from what I can tell means it has been canceled. It is too bad that the experiment didn’t work out as it seemed to me to be a great idea that could have succeeded. Perhaps the lack of stations picking up the service doomed it from the start but maybe a pure internet-only stream would be a better bet for something like this instead. I will try to find out what happened and let you know.

Harry Connick Jr. And Musicnotes.com Raise Money For Habitat For Humanity, New Orleans Division
Musicnotes, together with songwriter/artist Harry Connick Jr., today announced that all proceeds from the sale of downloadable sheet music for the song "City Beneath the Sea" will be donated to the New Orleans Division of Habitat for Humanity.
"City Beneath the Sea," written in 1996 as a tribute to his beloved city of birth, was specifically selected to be used in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort by Harry Connick Jr. 100% of proceeds from the sale of this $4.95 sheet music download, available exclusively at Musicnotes.com, will go towards the Habitat for Humanity relief program.

ASCAP Employees Announce Special Concert For Katrina Victims
The ASCAP Employees for Relief Fund announced a special concert scheduled for September 21, 2005 at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College in Manhattan (10th Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets) to benefit those suffering in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, particularly those who depend on the performance of music for their livelihood. The concert will feature over 50 talented ASCAP employees from several offices, which will be attended by all New York based employees. A limited number of seats will be made available to the general public on a first-come, first served basis in a unique effort to raise additional funds. Dallas-based singer/songwriter Jay Johnson has released his 1990 recording of Randy Newman’s "Louisiana 1927" available as a free download on his site. They are requesting that the download be accompanied by a donation of your choice to aid the hurricane victims.
Johnson is a multi-award winning artist from Dallas who’s career in music holds many accolades. Among his latest accomplishments, he was voted Male Vocalist of the Year at the 2005 Texas Music Awards.

ICM Records Artist DJ Coles To Donate New CD Proceeds To Katrina Disaster Relief
DJ Coles is nothing more than a servant Christian Recording Artist who has been touched deeply by the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. With an expected regional release of his new project, "Your Grace" scheduled for late September and a national release scheduled for the spring of 2006, Coles is poised to aid in the Hurricane relief efforts by donating proceeds immediately after his CD is released.

Broken Bow Records Steps Up To Help Hurricane Victims Immediately
It was announced by Broken Bow Records’ President/CEO Benny Brown that the record label, in conjunction with RED Distribution and CRT Custom Products, will donate $1 per unit sold on all BBR CD products including Craig Morgan, Jason Aldean, Joe Diffie and Sherrie Austin from today through 2005. Hurricane Katrina has left a trail of devastation throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Rustie Blue has released the third single off of her Chip Chip cd titled "Tomorrow Tonight". After recently parting ways with Bluesprings Music Group, Rustie Blue has signed a new booking agent agreement with Mission Country (Rachael Warwick, Arley Karlsen) for France and other European countries. Jean Claude Paulin du Besset of Mission Country will continue putting together a European tour for Rustie during 2006.

Prince Pens Songs For Hurricane Relief
In response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Prince has written 2 songs and will donate all proceeds to hurricane relief efforts.
The cybersingles "SST" and "Brand New Orleans" are now available for download at Prince’s official website, NPG Music Club (www.NPGMC.com). The classic and timely track "U Will be Moved," from Mavis Staples’ CD The Voice, has also been added to the download store to aid the relief effort.
"SST" and "Brand New Orleans" were recorded early Friday morning, September 2, at Prince’s Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis and released through his NPG Music Club the following day. Prince played all the instruments and sang all vocals.
The Musicology Download Store at the NPGMC offers well over 200 Prince songs, videos and ringtones direct from the source. The NPG Music Club was created in 2001 and is currently the top artist-owned and completely independent download service, winning "Best Use of Technology by an Artist" from the Billboard Digital Entertainment Awards. Radio Groups Come Together To Form United Radio Broadcasters Of New Orleans
In response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the radio groups serving New Orleans and the surrounding area have come together to form the United Radio Broadcasters of New Orleans. The United Radio Broadcasters of New Orleans is a joint effort to provide the region with the most complete, reliable and consistent radio broadcast of emergency recovery and relief information. It is comprised of stations operated by Clear Channel Radio, Entercom Communications and independent stations 1470 KLCL in Lake Charles and 1290 KJEF in Jennings. The collaboration features Entercom’s WWL-AM 870, enhanced by the resources of the other Entercom and Clear Channel stations in the region. The Louisiana Network out of Baton Rouge is also providing important facilities support.
An estimated 15 stations are combining programming and engineering resources that began airing the same broadcast at 10:00 p.m. Central Time last night. Programming consists of continuous news, information and coverage of local relief efforts, and will include live feeds from street reporters and interviews and updates from local officials and relief coordinators. A toll-free 800 number will allow listeners to call in with their experiences, eyewitness reports and questions. In addition, the stations will share a helicopter to transport engineers to transmitter sites and assist in the evacuation of employees as needed.

Juvenile Spearheading New Orleans Relief Efforts
Atlantic recording artist Juvenile, whose New Orleans home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, is helping spearhead the movement by the music community to organize relief efforts for his native city.
"Our city of New Orleans and several other surrounding cities are experiencing total devastation," said Juvenile. "People have lost their loved ones, their homes, their belongings, and their jobs. Many of our folks in New Orleans didn’t have much to begin with and now they have now lost everything. Everyone has to pull together to help all those who have suffered these great losses.
"We as Americans were so responsive to the world in the face of the tsunami, and we have sent our troops and our money to Iraq and Afghanistan," Juvenile continued. "So I am sure that we, as individuals and as a country, can apply to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida the massive level of effort and giving which is surely demanded now. Please keep our city, its people, and our families in your prayers and donate whatever you can to the Red Cross."
Teruis Gray, aka Juvenile, was not in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit. His home was located near the water on Lake Pontchartrain, in St. Tammany Parish in the city of Slidell. New Orleans’ neighbor to the east, Slidell was crossed by the eye of the hurricane, and Juvenile lost his house and all of his possessions. The multi-platinum rapper grew up in the Magnolia Projects in the center of New Orleans, and he has always been a New Orleans resident. His parents also live in New Orleans, and he has over 200 relatives in the area. The locations of many of his family members are still unknown, and only about half of them were able to get out before the hurricane arrived. Many of his friends also have still to locate family members.

The latest release from Rosetta West titled “Illumination” is the type of record that draws you in slowly but surely into it’s fine, churning rock ‘n’ roll sludge. Stripped down, low fi blues rock with some interesting twists and turns, Illumination is another fine release from the boys behind last year’s great X Descendant. If you ever wanted to hear “Chain of Fools” from a singer that to me eerily sounds like Phil Lynott resurrected then check out Illumination. Great molten rock and roll for 2005. Sugarlumps: A Psychedelic Selection of Groovy Movers and Sweet Freakbeat (Hard Soul Records)

I have always been a big fan of psycedelic rock and roll so I was blown away when I recently had a chance to listen to the new psych compilation from Hard Soul Records called Sugarlumps. This is a fantastic compilation that combines some bona fide rarities like “Candlelight” by Grantchester Meadow and “Path Through the Forest” by The Factory with cool recent stuff like “Sapce Travel” by Soul Hooligan and “These Eyes” by Jarvis Humby. A fantastic CD to blare from the rooftops and sufficiently weird enough to confuse most clueless American Idol fans, Sugarlumps with it’s combining the old with the new is a great idea executed to perfection by a great indie record label. I can’t wait for volume two!
