Rock and Roll Report Blitz! Airbourne
June 20, 2008 by Mark · Leave a Comment
I feel like I have to make a caveat before this blitz to avoid anybody pointing fingers and yelling sellout at me. Airbourne is on Roadrunner Records which is one of the preeminent hard rock/heavy metal independent record labels in the world. The thing is, they are not technically independent as they are now owned by the Warners Music Group. Now I have always said that I don’t discriminate based on mode of distribution and I still put all my time and focus on unsigned and smaller indie labels but this band is too good to ignore. And on top of that I don’t hear these guys on commercial rock radio anyways! That being said…..
Wanna Be a Rock Star? Matheson Takes a Look at the Michael J. Media Group

Nashville-based musician Mike Farley has always had a love for the “business” side of the music business. In fact, it was during his time as host of an open-mic night in Cleveland, Ohio that he found his own musical voice and started writing and performing his own music. The songs that he wrote have become 5 full-length albums and one acoustic EP. And although Mike loves to write and perform music, the “business” side of the music business is what ultimately made him move from Cleveland, Ohio to Nashville, Tennessee.
While living in Cleveland, Mike started helping other musicians with the promoting of their music, helping them move forward in their careers and getting them more exposure as far as radio play and larger venues to perform in.
And although Mike loves to write and perform music, the “business” side of the music business is what ultimately made him move. He took the part-time music venture he was operating and decided to go in full-time and start helping as many musicians as he could. And in 2003, Mike moved his company from Cleveland, Ohio to Nashville, Tennessee.
Mike Farley’s publicity company, known as Michael J. Media Group, features several different types of services to help musicians further their musical careers. Some of the services offered to clients include: creating and distributing press releases to local and national media outlets, follow up with press contacts, promote local or regional CD release parties or other events, assist in setting up radio and TV appearances or other promotional gigs, and solicit film and TV placements from music supervisors and publishers.
Currently, Mike has a large list of artists that are taking advantage of his publicity help. Some of his most well known clients include: Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, Badfish (the tribute to Sublime), and many others, including Tim Mahoney, the musician who was featured in the 40th Anniversary issue of Rolling Stone as a result of winning the Ray-Ban ‘Never Hide Your Music’ contest.
To find out the complete list of features and services offered by Mike Farley and the Michael J. Media Group, go to www.michaeljmedia.com. You can also contact the company by calling them at (615) 885-3652.

A lot of technical gremlins affected this podcast for some reason but that didn’t affect the amazing amount of bands on this week’s show.
Just a heads up that the next podcast will only be on July 9th as I take the time to move The Rock and Roll Report into its new virtual digs over the next two weeks. Publication resumes on July 7th so stop by and let me know what you think!
As always you can let me know what you thought of the podcast by emailing me at rockandrollreport@gmail.com of leaving a voice comment on the listener line at 206-339-3646 .

Scott Looks to the Future with James Hunter and the Past With Al Green
June 17, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

James Hunter - The Hard Way - Hear Music
Al Green - Lay It Down - Blue Note
Great soul music seems to be universal. Not only can it touch the hearts of young and old music fans (when it’s done right) but it can also cross color barriers easier than any other type of music. I mean, who can resist early Motown like The Supremes, Smokey Robinson or even Marvin Gaye? Who does not feel a little more alive when a song by Otis Redding or Aretha Franklin comes on the radio? Then try to sit still when one of the greatest of them all, y’all, James Brown, gets his furious dance beats percolating.
Matheson Checks Out the Groove Rock of Stealing Jane
June 16, 2008 by Matheson · Leave a Comment

The music industry has always been known for pushing the latest thing. But it also has a tendency to take a sure thing and run it into the ground. There are always hundreds of bands out there that are trying to get noticed at any given point. And if you follow the latest trend in the music scene, you seem to have a better chance of being signed.
However, this also creates a situation where everyone starts to sound the same. Every band starts to sound like every other band; which creates a style or trend in the industry, but also starts to make the music played on the radio sound monotonous and boring.
Rock and Roll Report Blitz! Swig
June 13, 2008 by Mark · Leave a Comment
It always seems that my favourite rock and roll has (in my mind at least) a connection, however tenuous to Mick Taylor-era Rolling Stones. It’s one of those things that you can’t explain other than to forcefully gesture at your throbbing speakers as they furiously try to cope with the sonic onslaught currently playing that sounds like an outtake from Exile on Main Street.
Swig give me that raunchy, swampy feeling that I like. Let’s put it this way, they are another perfect example of a band that inspires “volume knob creep.” This stuff has character, it has feeling and it only sounds good when you hit the maximum volume threshold in your car, something that you never realized actually existed before. Swig hit all the right notes for me. Raunchy singer, slightly sloppy and loud guitars, call and response vocals and did I mention they should be played loud? Check out this week’s podcast where I play True Grit and check out their video below for Simple Truth. Good stuff. Did I say they should be played loud?
Later.

Paperback Freud are a great band from Sweden who have consistently rocked my boat since I first heard them about 6 months ago. Kate was played on this week’s podcast.
