Bargain Basement Book Review: Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain

There is a danger sometimes in knowing too much about the musicians who create the music you love. Sometimes it is better to have that haze of mystery that surrounds performer from fan in case when the haze is pierced you find out that, well your hero is an asshole. This is a bit of the problem I had when reading Please Kill Me – The Uncensored Oral History of Punk by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain.
CD Review: The Jealous Girlfriends – s/t
On The Jealous Girlfriends’ My Space page, a writer states that “The Jealous Girlfriends make it work.” Although certainly meant as a compliment, this writer will go at least one step further. The Jealous Girlfriends don’t just make it work, they take varying musical ideas and influences, and put together the most creative, enjoyable and interesting new music release of 2008. The only album I would put in the same class as the Jealous Girlfriends’ self titled release, is the better known Arcade Fire’s “Neon Bible.” Both blend various musical influences, and out of the box thinking and writing, to create extremely interesting and creative albums.
Rock Princess’ Unsigned Pick of the Week is Elubo
October 30, 2008 by Rock Princess · Comments Off
ELUBO stands for great pop-music, perfectly singable singer-songwriter melodies served on a funky poprock groove basis and wrapped in playful sound design.
Talking of genres, it could well be described as “cineastic poprock” aiming at entertainment at the highest level.
CD Review: Tamas Wells – Two Years In April (Pop Boomerang Records)
October 30, 2008 by Scott Homewood · Leave a Comment
Wells is an Austrailian artist who has had an amazing last two years in his career, hence the title of his latest disc Two Years In April. In 2006 Wells’ first solo album A Plea In Vendredi started selling like gangbusters in Japan and he consequently signed with two prestigious Asian record labels, one in Japan and one in China. The result was Wells’ album selling thousands of copies, hitting the international charts and being able to finace a tour of the country where he played to packed houses on each stop. This from an artist who had just put out his first album. If that’s not pretty heady stuff I don’t know what is.

CD Review: New York Dolls – Live At The Fillmore East

This New York City glam band is, in a weird sort of way, cut from the same cloth as Memphis power poppers Big Star. Now, just hold on. Wait a minute before you get your music geek hackles up. Read more
A Competition for Metal Drummers
October 27, 2008 by Mark Boudreau · Leave a Comment
If you’re a metal drummer upset that there isn’t a competition for you to win, stop worrying. Sick Drummer magazine is starting an online contest called The Blast-Off Drum Competition. Metal drummers can upload a three-minute (or less) video of their best solo performance. Entries will then be judged by rockers like former Malevolent Creation’s Dave Culross. Two winners will be selected and they won’t only get a mention in the January issue of the magazine, but they’ll also take home a set of bass-drum pedals. A pair of second-place winners will pocket a gift pack from Hudson Music. Head to SickDrummerMagazine.com for more details.

The Rock and Roll Report Band of the Week is The Revisionists

When I first read Scott’s review of The Revisionists a few week’s back little did I know that I would be playing the CD almost non-stop since receiving it.
Dan Lavery, Kevin Sheppard and Sam Jones have been playing music professionally for years but you can tell they were made for each other after listening to their debut CD. With mutual influences ranging from The Clash, The Jam, David Foster Wallace and others that shaped them as musicians it is obvious that their music pulls from these influences that punk rock bravado that only works well if you really mean it. And these guys really mean it.
