November 30, 2008 by Mark Boudreau · 2 Comments
This week’s Band of the Week is Edinburgh, Scotland’s Heavy Drapes, a band I have personally been a fan of for a few years now and I was pumped when they emailed me to let me know that they are fresh out of the studio with four cool new tracks. I have always loved the name of the song the band has provided for this week’s free download, I Wanna Be Maladjusted. I have always considered it my personal motto! LOL
I’ll let the band explain a bit more about what they are all about:
CD Review: “Get Better” by Lemuria

It is an all-too-rare a treat to find an album that speaks to you so loudly that it makes you instantly fall in love with it. An album that has that type of power contains that special something that makes you want to listen to it over and over again. Usually when you happen to find that kind of album, it moves everything else down the list and immediately becomes your favorite album. The album that just recently shifted every other album down the list for me is “Get Better,” the current release from the band Lemuria.

The band started when bass player and lead singer Guy Snowdon asked Liam Hopkins (Rhythm Guitar) if he wanted to join a band. Liam accepted and recommended that Tom Iliffe (Lead guitarist) be asked too. Having previously enjoyed some songwriting sessions with Liam Tom also accepted and brought with him drummer and close friend Shaun Lee and after weeks of searching for a singer Guy stepped up and took the duties.

Subject – The making of the sericels based on the original artwork for The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine film soundtrack, released in 1969 on Apple Records, with new artwork and layout done by artist Jon Blosdale.
Released in 1968 and nominated for a Grammy (TM) for its Soundtrack, Yellow Submarine was a departure for The Beatles from the live-action films they had made to that point. Using a very simple animation technique and a psychedelic palette of colors, the film and its animation was directed and supervised by George Dunning, the director of The Beatles’ TV cartoon series, and was art directed by Heinz Edelman. It took a production team of over 200 over 11 months to create the sequences used in the film.

Lovingly compiled by musicologist and all-around 60’s music guru Ben Chaput, these ten comps feature some of the best obscure sides late ’60’s music has to offer. For the past ten years or so, rare psychedelic rock, garage and freakbeat have occupied the hearts and minds of music collectors everywhere as well as helping to empty their wallets. Scores of labels have popped up in the last decade dedicated to nothing but digging up and re-issuing rare private press releases as well as long-forgotten records put out on major labels. Think about how popular and noteworthy the Nuggets boxsets are and the Pebbles compilations and some of the other boxsets seeking to give listeners the best music of the ’60’s. Then, think about this great series of sets featuring some of the best music of the ’60’s all geared towards the collector and music freak, with rare songs never used on any other compilation. Truly, with this set of well-put-together comps, fans of this kind of music have hit the motherlode.
