April 30, 2009 by Rock Princess · Leave a Comment

stripping-the-pistols-350-x-2501My Pic of the week this week is an amazing group of talent Im lucky to call friends…..Stripping The Pistol……

Kyriakos (Charlie) Tsiolis (vocals)
Kevin Cherello (vocals, guitar)
John Lovette (guitar)
John Almonte (bass)
Joe Nunez (drums).

“We plan on deconstructing music”, says Kevin Cherello (vocals, guitar). Stripping the Pistol formed with the intention of breaking the rules. The Chicago five-piece blends aggression with melody. The seamless interplay of the dueling vocalists is balanced by the precision, power and energy of the music. Their 3-song sampler featuring “Five of You”, “I Think There’s Something Wrong” and “Gone Beautiful” caused an industry and Internet buzz rarely seen for such a new band. “We recorded it in one day, just to hear the music on tape”, explains Kyriakos. With no intention on unleashing it to the masses, the band was surprised once the labels started courting them.

CD Review: Alias “Never Say Never”

April 29, 2009 by Bill Sullivan · Leave a Comment

alias-200Many of us remember Alias as a one hit wonder from 1990 (”More Than Words Can Say”). Alias formed when Freddy Curci (vocals) re-teamed with Steve DeMarchi (guitars) after their old band’s (Sheriff) hit (”When I’m With You”) experienced a unexpected resurgence and took the top spot on the American charts in 1988 (the tune originally stalled at #61 in the US in 1983).

The self-titled Alias record is now considered a classic in many AOR circles, and I’ll admit it is one of my favorites of the era. I was disappointed that the advent of grunge caused their 1992 follow up release to be shelved. But here we are, 17 years later (!) and, thanks to the folks at Angelmilk Records, the long delayed second Alias record is now available.

The video was immediately added to Much Music and Much More Music and is already getting strong radio play. Hello Operator has also been showcased on E-Talk Daily and has toured with Faber Drive, Hilary Duff, Ill Scarlet, Switchfoot, Simple Plan, Hedley, Thornley, Loverboy and many more, making them an ideal mentor for ambitious indie bands.

CD Review: Eagles of Death Metal – Heart On (Downtown Records)

April 28, 2009 by Scott Homewood · Leave a Comment

eagles-of-death-metalKnown by music fans as the world’s coolest side project, Eagles of Death Metal have released another album full of the fun rock and roll the group is known for, though this album’s songs show EDM maturing just a tad while still plying their usual brand of glam rock and Stonesy swagger. While one of the many side projects that involves members from the band Queens of The Stoneage (and part of the massive Rhinoceros 6 3/4 collective) the EDM project has always been in a class by itself and seems to be the musical diversion members Josh Homme and Jesse Hughes have the most fun doing.
