PIGSHIT by Gary Pig Gold 20 BIG ONES: GARY PIG GOLD’S ALL-TIME FAVORITE BEACH BOY RECORDS
May 29, 2009 by Gary Pig Gold · Leave a Comment
With another endless summer again approaching, and with it the latest in a long long LONG line of repackaged compilation discs (the quite suspiciously titled “Summer Love Songs”), I hearby take it upon myself to compile a Rock and Roll Reporter’s Guide of sorts to the sort of sounds every discriminating listener, both old and new, should first consider sampling when delving into the vast, sonically daunting Beach Boys audio catalog.
Ready?
Then let’s…..
Catch A Wave (1963)
A wet, wild and totally wonderful Call To Arms for the barefooted legions of West Coast beach trash, both real and imagined: This is one of the band’s first, and best, signposts towards the fabled, mythical Land of California (“Four Seasons, you BETTER believe it!”)
The Warmth Of The Sun (1964)
A rich, evocative B. Wilson melody swirling beneath lyrics of loss, pain and remorse (composed in the wake of the JFK assassination): One of an absolute wealth of Beach Boy recordings which continue to grow and mature ever so gracefully with age.
I Get Around b/w Don’t Worry Baby (1964 single)
This was the very first Beach Boys record I ever owned: Not a bad way to start off one’s collection, no?
CD Review: Delaney Gibson – The Worst Kind of Way (self released)
May 29, 2009 by Scott Homewood · 1 Comment
Singer-songwriter and pianist Gibson shows her multitude of strengths on this new CD though her music will undoubtedly lead to comparisons to Tori Amos and other female singer/songwriters of that ilk, if it’s noticed at all. It’s unfortunate really, as the late ’90’s showed great promise for women musicians thanks to the Lilith Fair and the increased presence of female singer/songwriters on the radio during the tour’s three-year span of influence showed the music business as a whole was ready to get behind the movement. Since then, truly distinctive female artists have once again faded into the background, fading from view so that cookie cutter pop tarts can take the spotlight, even though their talents are meager and all they are known for are the drugs they consume, the men they screw and how many out of wedlock babies they create.
WEB RADIO MAY CONTRIBUTE TO RISE OF INDEPENDENT MUSIC
May 29, 2009 by Mark Boudreau · Leave a Comment
(Via RAIN) A2IM has found that independent music is increasing in popularity, thanks in part to the “wealth of new platforms” on which music can now be heard, including Internet radio. The organization found that 40% of all music played at non-traditional web radio is independent, while over half of the music aired on Pandora is independent. Independent labels also accounted for 32% of aggregate album sales in 2008 and picked up 56 awards at this year’s Grammys, according to A2IM. “When traditional gatekeepers and obstacles to reaching fans are removed, indies thrive,” the release states. Fox Jaws
Gearing up for the release of the follow up to their critically adored debut, Goodbye Doris, Fox Jaws will bring their blistering live incarnation to the east coast. Having played alongside such noteworthy acts such as Tokyo Police Club, Attack in Black, Ladyhawk – Fox Jaws have managed to remain Barrie and Toronto’s best kept secret. Building fluorescent folk tinged melodies, layers of post rock ambiance, and classic rock influence, behind dueling vocalists – the haunting and dark Daniel Allen and the rough around the edges, yet warm in the center howling pipes of Carleigh Aikins -Fox Jaws’ live set is really like no band you’ve seen before. They will be previewing material from the forthcoming Nevado Records release (expect a late summer release date) and of course leading sing-a-longs to classic fan favorites.

RockAngel’s Weekly Radar – Koufax
May 28, 2009 by Nicole "Rock Angel" Brors · 1 Comment
This week, RockAngel’s Weekly Radar brings you Koufax…the best band you’ve never heard.
Though they’ve bounced between a few record labels, they’ve released their newest album Strugglers through Doghouse (US) and they’ve really nailed their sound on this one. This is one of those albums that hits you hard with the first few lines of a sax on the first song and then never lets go. Their sound fuses splashes of Cold War Kids with Spoon (“Name of Love” sounds like something right off of The Underdog), but manages to stay completely original. Strugglers was one of my top ten albums of the year in 2008 (released in September) and it has never let me down.
Each song brings something new to the table, but the album flows together well. It’s like a trail mix bar…there are lots of different components that are great on their own, but even better when you stick them all together. Koufax isn’t currently touring, but maybe if they actually got the attention they deserve, we could all be lucky enough to catch a live show.
Some of my faves on the album include “Any Moment Now” and “Once In A While”. What can I say, I’m a sucker for saxophones and horns (even if they are synthesized) So take a listen, show some love, and keep rockin’…

Live Show Photo Review: Grady at The Tatoo Rock Parlour, Toronto
May 26, 2009 by Mike Forbes · Leave a Comment
Gordie, Ben and Nina roped their horses out front of the Tattoo Rock Parlour downtown Toronto Saturday night and sauntered into the bar shakin off the dust, lookin for something to wet the whistle. The bartender instinctively passed Gordie a double Wild Turkey on the rocks and looked to Big Ben who held up two fingers: “Two sasparillas and make it snappy”…
As they sidled up to the bar, Ben handed Nina her drink and the three surveyed their surroundings with a deafening silence. This bar they’re gonna turn upside down. Few know it. Few would believe it. But everybody’s gonna know after tonight what this Texas threesome can do with the right guns n ammo.
I guess before Clint Eastwood steps in and starts shootin, I should step back into reality and let ya’ll know what really happened. Gordie and Ben brought out an arsenal of weapons, plugged em into some of the loudest cabs Traynor has to offer and blew the doors off the Tattoo that night.
