Rock and Roll Report TV: Justin Townes Earle, “Midnight at the Movies”

Lately, Justin Townes Earle has been tearing things up. He’s recently done sessions on WNYC’s Soundcheck, KEXP, NPR’s “World Cafe,” and Daytrotter. Rolling Stone gave Midnight at the Movies four stars, and Esquirecalled standout track “Mama’s Eyes” one of the 50 songs every man should be listening to. He recently played the Bonnaroo festival, and will be heading out later this summer for the Big Surprise tour – an old fashioned revue featuring Old Crow Medicine Show, Dave Rawlings Machine (f/ Gillian Welch) and the Felice Brothers, as well as a whole bunch of solo dates.

Intense Nick’s Snapshot Review and Interview with Voodoo Johnson

(Ed. Note. This review was previously featured on May 27th but has been updated with an interview with the band so we present it to you again so you can get to know this great band.)vj-logo-head1

Bruce Dickinson said that ‘fans of Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin should check these guys out’. I wholeheartedly agree; in fact I would add to this my personal opinion that Voodoo Johnson are the best thing to hit the UK Rock scene since the original line up of Iron Maiden back in ‘79. They are a truly inspired balls-out full-on five piece Hard Rock band based in Birmingham, UK. They are a hot bed of all that has been and is good about Rock music, packed into the barrel nice and tightly then set off with a variety of fuse lengths. I their own inimitable way Voodoo Johnson are shaping the future of Rock already, they are currently number 27 in the unsigned charts over at http://www.tourdates.co.uk/default.aspx or check them out at http://www.myspace.com/voodoojohnson you will not be disappointed.

I have been checking out their songs and they are all brilliant, glowing examples of top Rock songwriting, production and musicianship. They have a superior grasp of driven rolling rhythms accompanied by outstandingly colourful riffs and chords. The vocals are a perfect match. It all synergises into a Rock sound second to none in a fresh style of its own. Also, very much like a great act from Australia, they have two brothers on lead and rhythm guitar. It is BRILLIANT, find out for yourself, Voodoo Johnson ROCKS! I recently had the chance to interview the boys and I have updated this post with our interview.

CD Review: Paul Jones – Starting All Over Again (Collector’s Choice)

paul-jonesThis is a definite blast from the past right here! This legendary English R&B singer has named his new album quite perfectly as he is indeed Starting All Over Again in the American market, where he has seen only sporadic music releases since leaving the band Manfred Mann in the early ’60′s. And if you’re searching your brain and wondering if Jones may have sang on the band’s hit cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Blinded By The Light in the mid-70′s think again. By that time, the band was called Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and Jones had been gone for about a decade or so. So, as the album title suggests, this is indeed a new start for Paul Jones, who has only been active in the music business sporadically since his departure from the band in 1966.

Rock and Roll Report Podcast 54 – The Hammock and iPod Show!

girl-in-hammock-webFinally! Rock and Roll Report Podcast #54 was a long time coming but if you are a regular reader of the site you will know that we have been having major server issues that had to be addressed and so my time was preoccupied by that for the last few weeks.

This week’s podcast has been in the works for a long time. I have been wanting to do a “headphones show” for awhile and the playlist for this podcast is very much suited for relaxing in a hammock or on a lounge chair, preferably on the beach or by the pool with headphones on. The songs deal with love, lost, escape and failure and the lyrics are definitely worth listening to carefully.

Live Photo Essay: Dope in Concert

dope-coverSo a while back I was out at the park and I saw this big guy wandering around in old Victorian clothes monologuing to himself. Now I’ve seen a lotta weird fuckers in my life but this was a little bit out there. He was going on and on in a Shakespearean lingo that I couldn’t make heads or tails out of so after curiosity got the best of me, I wandered over to see what this guy was all about.

I think what he told me was that he’d been out monologuing in the village square one day when some chick started screaming something about him being a witch, he tried his best to ignore the woman but then she started chanting “Stone him! Stone him!” Well this caught on and before he knew it he’d gotten nailed in the head with a giant rock and bam.. he blacked out.

When he awoke, he was downtown Toronto in this park. He really was a space cadet. Everything seemed to bum him right out. A chick skated by on roller blades and this sent him into another monologuing fit something about “wheel footed Harpies”… he really knew nothing of our 21st century ways so I thought it my duty to take him under my wing and teach him what I could.

The show occurs the weekend before Halloween – October 23 and 24, 2009 – at San Francisco’s famous and storied arena – The Cow Palace.

In honor of the event, the Radisson Hotel Bay Front in Brisbane has blocked entire floors exclusively for Exotic Erotic Ball guests at discounted rates of $109 per night. Or – for a price of $669, the Ball is offering guests an amazing package of three nights at the Radisson, two VIP tickets to the Ball, a meet and greet hotel party, free shuttles to and from airport and the event, unlimited entry into the Friday/Saturday Expo, and $30 per person in “Ball Bills” to spend on any item(s) of their choice.

To be considered, bands must submit their EPK (Electronic Press Kit) through Sonicbids to http://www.sonicbids.com/exoticerotic on or before September 14, 2009. All entries are juried, and two winners chosen to play before thousands of masked, costumed, and otherwise elaborately attired fans. The 2009 show marks the Ball’s third annual collaboration with Sonicbids.

“Thirty years – pretty amazing,” remarks Mann. “Did I think I would make it this far? No. But I’m thrilled to be here, and if you want to see how thrilled, meet me in San Francisco in October. And for those looking for a sexy and memorable vacation in a great city at a great price, where fun is absolutely guaranteed – you cannot do better than The 30th Annual Exotic Erotic Ball!”

The Exotic Erotic Ball and Expo fills six acres of space, with 5 stages of live headline music, top DJs, erotic performers, exotic dancers, wild circus sideshows, visually dazzling sets, fantasy themed halls, BDSM demos, fetish fashions, plus sexy shenanigans, and a bit of the bizarre. There are many adult stars, celebrity guests, costume contests with over $10,000 in prizes, and over 100 exhibits showcasing the latest in exotic fashion, erotic art, and adult products. Despite all the above, it’s the costumes and outfits worn by the 20,000+ attendees themselves – colorful, creative, and captivating – that make the show truly unrivaled.

Mann also announced that the 30th Annual Exotic Erotic Ball will bring back The Blue Room, a couples-only room with extra-erotic activities and ambience, perfect for lifestyle encounters. “I’m pulling out all the stops,” he added, “this is truly going to be the show of shows.”
