Intense Nick Brings Us Up To Date on Rock Out, An Incredible Night of Rock and Roll To Benefit Cancer Research

Rock Out Final Poster web(Ed’s Note: The Rock and Roll Report is as much about community as we are about rock and roll and when we see a worthwhile cause we jump in and support it 100%. Rock Out is just such a cause and we are proud to be associated with it. We will let our UK correspondent Intense Nick fill us in on the details.)

As of today (26/10/09) it is eighteen days until Rock Out has its first gig at the Cheese and Grain Hall in Frome, Somerset UK on Friday the 13th of November this year. I must admit to being anxious and a bit nervous about the whole thing. So much has gone into it since December/January 2008/9 when I had the dream which inspired the whole thing alongside so much inspiration from bands and friends of mine on various networking sites. However I am confident that this project will be a great success and achieve its goal to raise funds for Cancer Research UK while providing an additional promotional platform for so many brilliant and inspirational independent/unsigned bands and artists who I have befriended while networking and working here at www.rockandrollreport.com as Intense Nick (UK Correspondent).

Full details and a great many ‘free’ downloads from many willing and supportive bandmates are available at the recently made Rock Out website, www.inrockout.com, do please take a look at this and enjoy the generosity of the bands. All that is asked is that you show appreciation by using the ‘Donate’ button on the ‘favour for a Favour’ page, but this is not essential, just highly useful and the best way to show appreciation for the involved bands generosity and to show support for the project. This set up is likely to change very soon to ramp up the incentive to donate.

‘Nephu Huzzband’ Get Candid: Recording On No Sleep, Drinking With Fans, Scaring Pretentious Art Kids, and the Beauty of Water and Natural Noises

NEPHUHUZZBAND_022 editNottingham’s Nephu Huzzband delivers a raw punk-rock debut album that is charismatic to the core. Eighteen months in the making, Elementary was finally released at the start of October and the band’s hard work seems to be paying off. NME has described the four-piece as “gawky depressed underdogs [that] are painfully brilliant,” and I assure you that is a compliment. There in fact is something painfully brilliant about their sound and this truly makes them a band to be on to lookout for. Their EP, Papers, was released last year and received national support in the U.K. with endless airplay, and built expectations for their debut album. With Elementary, Nephu Huzzband has not disappointed.

When it came time to dig deep and discover what makes Nephu Huzzband tick, Guitarist Adam Popple and Bassist Jamie Barrow decided to take on the challenge. Vocalist Tom Bentley and Drummer Rob Challinor had no objections.

1. How did Nephu Huzzband come about?

A: Adam: We all met at school and were all listening to similar bands. Everyone wanted to be in a band so we did the obvious thing and decided to start Nephu Huzzband.

2. When you’re writing music – what’s the process?

A: Adam: We all come up with ideas on our own, which is what I really like about our writing process. When we do this it allows every band member to add their own sound and own influence to a song. When actually bringing a song together, we do it in the practice room [...] basically bringing together our ideas into one.

Rock and Roll Photo Essay – The Rebel Reviewer Revisits Motorhead

lemmy coverMotorhead

The Sound Academy

Toronto, Ontario

September 2, 2009-09-07

Last time I saw Motorhead, Lemmy was touring with guitarist Wurzel, longtime drummer, Phil “the Animal” Taylor and guitarist Phil Campbell. It was February 13, 1988 in London Ontario, I went solely to see Lemmy open for Alice Cooper, who, at the time, I didn’t really give two shits about.

Now it could have been the double hit of purple microdot I was on, or it could just be the fact that it was and still stands as THEE best show I’ve ever seen. Not only did I get my face ripped off by the mighty Motorhead but I also found out that night why so many people love Alice Cooper.

CD Review: Curtains For You – “What A Lovely Surprise To Wake Up Here”

This Seattle based, five-piece retro-pop outfit Curtains For You have the delicious melodies and intricate three- and four-part harmonies that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. The band consists of Matthew Gervais (guitar/lead vocal), Mikey Gervais (guitar/ sax/ vocals), Nick Holman (bass/euphonium/vocals), Peter Fedofsky (piano/vocals), and Dave Lawrence (drums). Leaning on a big pile of 60′s classic pop influences and structures, they put it in the blender and whip up into a fresh but totally familiar sound.

Rock and Roll Report Podcast #62 – So Glad You Dig Me

cute girl smilingFor those expecting a podcast last week I apologize but as I did Rock and Roll Report Radio on October 12th I just couldn’t get a podcast together in time for release on Wednesday.

On this week’s podcast I turn things on their head a bit and feature what I consider 3 very distinct styles of music in 3 very distinct sets. And I went against my initial impulse to start of the show with the harder stuff to keep things interesting!

I have just finished reading “Rick Rubin: In the Studio” and it is a pretty fascinating book as Rubin’s taste in music know no boundaries. From hip hop to hard rock, metal to Pop, Red Hot Chili Peppers to Johnny Cash, the guy understands that music is about the song and the emotion it conveys. A highly recommended read and a good rule of thumb to go by. Don’t get caught up in genres in niches, focus on the song and let the rest take care of itself which is kind of what I did this week. I love all this songs and at first listen you might find them to be quite different from each other but to me that doesn’t matter. Each song caught my ear and I like each one regardless of whatever genre YOU think they belong in!

CD Review: True Nature- “Feels Like Centuries”

truenature2True Nature have just released their latest CD called Feels Like Centuries and this new EP is a great listen.

True Nature is one of the strongest groupings of musicians to ever come together for the sake of creating music. “Along with Lou Barlow on lead vocals and guitars, three other musicians helped to make the band’s music a reality: The lead guitarist for the group is Gerry Leonard, a guitarist who has recently been performing with Rufus Wainwright and David Bowie; the bassist for the group is none other than Tony Levin, known for his work with John Lennon and Peter Gabriel, amongst many others; and the drummer from True Nature is Aaron Commess, founding member of the Spin Doctors.”

Scotland’s ‘Kick to Kill’ Survive Tragedy and Show Some Love for Old Punk Fans, Japan and Hate on the Hypothetical Island Album Question

kick to kill 1Glasgow-based Kick to Kill is truly an unstoppable, indestructible band that is being engulfed by excited hype as it sets the stage for the reveal of its addictive, dark, and simultaneously beautiful, rock sound.

The Scottish four-piece, which formed in 2007, has gone through some significant career and life-changing turbulences in its relatively short existence. Days after the debut single, Quit Tomorrow, was launched, Kick to Kill began to fall apart and was soon left with no bass player. Finding the perfect candidate and finalizing their line up – Dave Cook (Vocals/Synth), Harris Hill (Synth), Lewis Macaulay (Drums) and Ewan Shearer (Bass) – they began recording new tracks, and that’s when the next unforeseen event shook the band. This time though, it was more traumatic. Frontman Dave Cook was attacked on the streets of Glasgow and stabbed four times in the head and chest. Barely, but thankfully, avoiding a punctured lung, the relentless Cook showed the utmost determination and perseverance when he discharged himself the next morning and was quoted as simply saying, “It doesn’t hurt.”
