An orgy of Greek rock and roll!

I have featured Greek rock and roll before but if you are looking for a crash course there is no better place then the Greek Rock Orgy that Dinos hosted on May 19th on WHRB. Since he was kind enough to post the playlist to the Bomp List, I thought that I would repeat it here for the benefit of those of us who are just getting our feet wet. First some background courtesy of Dinos:
“One of the least documented international rock’n’roll scenes is the one that developed in Greece starting from the mid ’60’s. This orgy puts the peculiar sounds of Greek rock’n’roll bands from the ’60’s and early ’70’s in the spotlight. Most of the tracks of the genre that were recorded around that time in Greece – almost all in studios with minimal equipment and designed for the recording of Greek popular bouzouki music – were sung in English, but frequently it’s hard to tell because of the thick accents. In the course of this program we will listen to some of the best of those, as well as a fair share of songs in the Greek language and even a few oddities sung in French and Italian. The criterion for inclusion for all of these, however, is that they exemplify the influences of rock’n’roll or rock’n’roll-related musical genres – beat, pop, garage, r’n’b, soul, surf, and psychedelia – on the local culture. Many of the tracks and bands that will be featured have never been played on the radio, not even in Greece, but listeners will agree that it’s not simply their obscurity or their frequently odd character that justifies their claim to be heard. “

  1. I just discovered this site. I was the drummer for Zoo, writer and lead vocalist on Six Miles From The Cage and (briefly) the Presleyesque break on Something’s Got Ahold On Me. I’ve written a book about what it was like for Zoo, a US-British band operating out of the American school in Athens, and hope to get it published in the UK or US soon. If anyone wants to know more about that scene in the Athenian 60s, they can contact me at the above e-mail address. Cheers!

  2. HELL-O Greek rock has nothing to be jaelous from american and british rock! xilina spathia, trypes, magik de spell, ypogia reymata, pyx lax and others have so many great songs.which melody is better than this of o basilias tis skonis by xilina spathia(wooden swords)? all apologies by nirvana, walk this way by aerosmith, enter sandman by metallica, narcotic by liquido, scar tissue by rhcp or where is my mind by pixies? none! xilina spathia are one of the best bands ever.their song treno fantasma (phantom train) is miles cooler than any doors song but in fact they were inspired by the doors to make it.pix lax may be the most kmown rock group outside greece but xilina spathia and trypes are playing the coolest musik i’ve ever heard..

  3. Hello – I was the lead singer for the Greek band “Jaguars”. I saw you had a show titled: An orgy of Greek rock and roll! and my band is listed #70. I was wondering if you can give me more info or if there is a CD I can buy with the songs played. Thank you

  4. I was the sax player for the “Sette Amici”
back in the ’60’s….we played Athens and down to Korinth.

  5. Thanks to Mark of the Rock and Roll Report for posting the playlist of my show from a few of years ago. This was meant to be a special tribute to Greek rock’n’roll bands from the 60’s and 70’s — a subject which has been a personal obsession for several years now — but it could not possibly be complete. Many more tracks/bands that deserved to be included do not appear here, either due to the fact that I was missing their recordings or because of the limited time available for the show.
I am particularly happy to see (for the first time today, almost three years after the fact — I had not checked the site before) that some of you who were part of this scene responded to this post. If you are among those who posted something here (John Carr, Nick Poulios, or Dimitris Mavrides) or were otherwise involved with Greek bands in the 60’s/70’s, please get in touch with me by email (cmekios@gmail.com). I do not have your contact information and would love to learn more about your bands.
