Live Photo Credit: Vince Jimenez

It’s not often that an interviewer and interviewee become great friends; this is a transient industry after all, but in the case of Manda Mosher and I we hit it off from the first day we connected about 4 years ago and since we have seen one another morph and change both in our careers and personal lives. In fact I think that I can be one of her harshest critics rather than one that simply hands out the compliments left and right because I know what she is capable of doing. Also, while I tend to interview female musicians more than male (though both are great) artists Manda has been one of my favorite Indie artists male or female that I have ever come across. With an amazing voice, soul and songs that seem as if they are speaking to the listener and only the listener- I know why over the last year her career has been taking off-now allowing her to work with such famous people as Kevin Costner and his band. Signed to Red Parlor Records in the last year or so; she has been working extra hard to build the great fan base who tends to show up to her shows in spades.

Manda has also found a record label which gives her the creative freedom she has always yearned for but the best possible outlet for getting her music out to a wide range of people in the music industry and outside. To experience Manda live or even recorded is a treat and people can feel and sense the joy and the charisma which all great entertainers possess. As a music journalist and friend who has been keeping a keen eye on what she has been doing the last 4 years I couldn’t be more proud of her and the amazing band that she has to back her.

A few weeks ago I went to a benefit concert in which Manda was one of many female acts playing that evening. I went to the I Heart Inc benefit concert to see the Bombshell Alliance concert (for more information about this wonderful charity that gives back to Indie artists please visit www.iheartinc.com) and I got to see Manda play live which I hadn’t done in several years. While not surprised that she had grown as a live performer I underestimated her ability to get a crowed riled up and moving. The Hotel Café is a small venue with some sound issues perhaps where the first song or two her band seemed to drown out her voice but she gave a roof raising set of 5 songs. I did notice that while she is extremely strong when actually singing, playing the harmonica or guitar her one area that she may wish to work on is when she is either yodeling or humming. It seems that her voice cracks. Of this live performance her new song “City of Clowns” about living life in Los Angeles was a hit. In the middle of Hollywood for which I believe the highest concentration of “Clowns” tend to be drawn to-she worked that song extremely well-as well as having the LA based audience nodding their heads as their bodies swayed in agreement with the truth behind this catchy songs lyrics. If you don’t live in the LA Basin it is becoming easier and easier to catch Manda’s live act since she has been spending more time on the road than at home. To find out about future tour dates visit her website at www.mandamosher.com.

RRR (Christi B.): Manda it’s been so long since we last spoke; you’re never in LA anymore; now I have to find you wherever you may be. So I just want to open up with giving you a big hug and kiss. (Leave out if no reply any of 1st two questions can open) You know I’m a bit crazy!!!!!

MM: Ah, It was wonderful to finally see you again at the Hotel Show, and give you a big hug in person, finally!

RRR: Manda you have had a pretty wild year this year; one can call it a whirlwind. What emotions and how are you holding up running around for months on end staying in motels, crashing wherever you can find; any physical toll?

MM: It was certainly the most adventure filled year. I took on touring which is not what you’d expect it to be. It’s thrilling but also exhausting. You disconnect from things at home and it puts you living in the moment when you’re traveling to new towns and out of your element. There is loads of driving when touring and to me meeting new meaningful people and sharing music on the road is an invaluable experience.

RRR: I understand, I heard you had been sick. Are you feeling better yet?

MM: I’m feeling good now. I’ve been home for over a month and catching up on life here, and sleep. I’m more susceptible to catching colds on the road because there’s little rest to be had, and ended up playing a few shows under the weather, but nothing serious enough to have to cancel shows thankfully.

RRR: That’s great to hear you’re feeling better.

RRR: When we first met almost four years ago you were a struggling artist unsigned and trying to build a fan base; today you are signed to Red Parlor records based out of New York City as well as something called Bug Music. What is that and how did that come about?

MM: I can’t believe it has been so long since we first met; things have changed so much and I feel that I’m finally reaching many of the dreams I had for myself and career. Signing with Red Parlor was a milestone after finishing my first album, and helped me to evolve and dig in deeper. Bug Music is a large independent music publisher; they’re in the song business so they’re shopping catalog for placement in Film/TV as well as representing songs for other artists to cover. The publishing deal came through Red Parlor who decided to set up a publishing entity with Bug to represent my songs. For me this makes sense to have a team helping with the business, especially when you’re on the road.

RRR: Any plans to really start marketing you or merchandising your image, your Cd, etc? (If I’m right this goes with the Bug Music, so you can explain it here I will edit above question.)

MM: Because I’m most comfortable in a natural earthy space, I can’t imagine slick marketing or imaging that you see associated with today’s top charters being applied to my music, for me all of that has to come naturally. The photographer, who shot the last album photographs, John Halpern, is incredibly adept at capturing the raw essence of an artist sans the Hollywood glitz. I believe it’s simply a matter of exposing more people who understand to what we’re already doing, instead of “packaging it.”

RRR: I know that you have done The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Opened for Kevin Costner & Modern West his band in Aspen. What is it like to be around musicians and celebrities you never thought you would meet much less work with?

MM: To me it’s really an honor because you know how much they’ve accomplished, and the further you get into show business, you recognize the hard work. It’s made to look easy, but it is not. I just feel honored that my work is taking me to these places and adventures.

RRR: You did an interactive video for “One True Love”, what inspired that and how much work went into it for you, your great band and the crew?

MM: Elad Offer, the director came up with and created the interactive concept. I remember seeing a trial interactive video he was working on with Ido Sasson, my lead guitarist. Then the idea came up of doing a video for “One True Love” in a convertible car, and we realized we could apply the interactive part to switching which driver sits in the driver’s seat and allow for the user to automate the individual instrument mixes. Elad put together a traditional music video, and then the interactive version to follow. The band, oh they were great and I was surprised to see them all ham it up for the camera. We did the shoot in one day out in the desert. Working with just natural sunlight and 110-degree heat, we had to move quickly to get all the shots. The interactive video is up now at www.manda-onetruelove.com, and is the first of its kind.

RRR: Can you tell us a bit about your band mates, who they are and where they generally played before you all came together? I think many people find it interesting how bands actually meet and form.

MM: The current lineup starts with Ido Sasson who plays lead guitar and collaborates on much of what I do musically be it live performance or recording. Guy Erez, who produced my debut album “Everything You Need” brought Ido in to play on the record, and we’ve been working together ever since. Ido’s previous bands were harder rock but his playing now brings a great balance of classic rock and modern approach. Alex Balderston plays bass with us, and Ido brought Alex in. Alex is superb in his playing, his feel is far beyond his years, he is not a shy guy, and he lives his life and his music on his sleeve. Working with Davo who was brought in by Guy, and oh I have become very spoiled by playing with Davo; he is just the best. Davo plays with other notable acts Brother and Donna De Lory. Carl Byron who plays keys I met at The Cinema Bar. I saw him performing with the late Duane Jarvis and sometimes you just know. I knew he was perfect, and was hopeful he’d feel the same way, thankfully he did. Ian Gothe I met at a local bar on acoustic jam night, and we became fast friends. In addition to playing 12 string acoustic, flute, and harmonica in the band, he is one of my favorite people to write with. I’ve also played with Mike Medeiros on drums and percussion. Mike came in through Alex, and brings a great percussive sound when an acoustic show is needed and Danny Thompson sat in on drums for our Hotel show in August. Danny plays drums for Scott Weiland.

RRR: From chatting with you several times in the last few weeks I got the impression you are so happy to be back home in LA. Where have you been touring with your band and what were the lifestyle changes you had to make and how exhausting is it really? So many think the life is filled with glamour and nightly hard core partying.

MM: Glamour on the road? Hmm, that’s the furthest world from the road experience, at least for indie acts. You have to be careful with every dollar spent so you stay at cheap motels, friend’s homes, you may not shower every day, do your make up in the car or the club parking lot, no real sleep…there could be hard core partying after the shows, but then who’s gonna drive you to the next city in the morning, you are so you’ve got to pace yourself. I love driving after the show recounting all the moments of the night. This summer was, NYC, Woodstock, Oklahoma, Aspen, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Memphis, Colorado, Arizona, Austin, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Ventura, some great LA shows, and then back to many of them again. It is good to be home, but it’s hard to adjust to when you first get back, you have this urge to keep moving, traveling, playing, and avoid the mundane things like grocery shopping.

RRR: I went up to the www.Iheartinc.com Bombshell Alliance concert at the Hotel Café in Hollywood to see you and the other extremely talented musician’s play, tell us about what www.IheartInc.com is and why you all looked like you stepped out of some 1950’s suppressed type of homemaker or sex goddess sorority?

MM: The 50’s theme tied in with The Bombshell Alliance Pin-Up calendar we were all in, with proceeds from the evening and the calendar going to the I HEART Charity founded by Arrica Rose. I HEART then chooses charitable organizations to donate to or causes to support such as sending kids to The Silver lake Music Conservatory, and supporting recycling programs. Arrica calls us all up and asks us “hey are you up for dressing up 50s for the show and we’ll have your hair and makeup done to style?” I’m like yeah totally, as long as I don’t have to wear the schoolteacher outfit from the calendar on stage =) Rockabilly, now that I can do.

RRR: You played a 5 song set that evening; some of the songs were new like: City of Clowns, The Only One and a Blues song written by Willie Dixon called my Babe which was just rollicking. How do you think these new songs went over with the crowd and were they the first time you performed them live?

MM: I get such a kick performing “City Of Clowns” and thought it worked well as an opener. It’s a fairly new song we have plans to record, but it is a different thrill to play one of the new ones than the standards. “The Only One” we have plans to record as well, and have been playing that song live for over a year, it has that old world romanticism to it, and then My Babe, oh yeah it’s great to let the band stretch out and show their wares on that one. The energy with the crowd felt great in the room that night so I’d imagine the crowd was happy; I get so many compliments on the band, they’re serious players.

RRR: With new songs being performed live that usually means another Cd is going to be cut. When can we expect to get another chance to get a new Manda Mosher Cd?

MM: We’re just about to leave for NY to begin recording for the next release, an EP due out early next year on Red Parlor. The EP will be a bit of a teaser prior to the next full-length album.

RRR: The song City of Clowns is a really cool song, what or where is about?

MM: The City Of Clowns is my nickname for Los Angeles. You always hear City Of Angels, City Of Angels my ass! It’s a City Of Clowns, and the funny part is you end up being one of the clowns by association. When I perform it in other cities, people feel it applies to their home cities too, clowns are everywhere, watch out.

RRR: Do you think people who don’t live in the LA Basin could really get the whole feel for the insanity of this town?

MM: I think New Yorkers understand in a way, but LA is a big façade so I don’t know that anyone really understands it totally. It’s the world of pretend, grabbing for shiny objects that might hold the key to your desires, whatever people are climbing towards – and often that shiny object is a barbed monster. I always felt Las Vegas was more insane, that place is as dark as it gets to me; LA is close. People are gambling everything they’ve got for usually selfish reasons. This is why I love traveling outside of LA, where people don’t care “what you do,” “what you drive,” etc…Most people just want to share how their day was. However, there are good things about LA too. After all-I was born and raised here and consider it my home-at this point I don’t see myself changing the place I call home anytime soon.

RRR: I read you were to go on tour again; when can your fans start getting tickets to your shows? Also, are there any solid dates set up yet?

MM: I have two tours in the works for the beginning of the year, but I can’t announce the dates yet until everything is solidified. I’m planning on the West Coast again and Europe. They’ll be posted on my website www.mandamosher.com

RRR: Manda, I want to thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule. Is there anything you would like to add that we may not have covered?

MM: Christi, it is a pleasure and an honor to interview with you again, and to be friends on this journey.

RRR: Hugs and kisses to you and your family… talk soon!

Our last Triple R Girl of 2009 is the very multi-talented, very gravitational SAMANTHA GIBB. She formed her band, MEG, in Miami Beach, FL, in 2002. The band consists of her dearest friends from club days on South Beach. MEG is Samantha Gibb (lead vocals, piano/keys, and rhythm guitar), Lazaro Rodriguez (lead guitar, piano/keys, percussion, and back-up vocals), and Nick Sallons (bass, percussion, and back-up vocals). The MEG/Samantha sound is melodic rock/alternative with touches of electronica and some yummy bass. It’s romance, soul, hope, melancholy and beats, all rolled into one.

Samantha comes from a musical family (the Gibbs, hello…) and always knew she would go into music. She and her friends decided to start playing beautiful, soulful and rocking music on South Beach back in the day, and after gigging locally for a few years there they decided to rent a house for two months to check out Nashville, TN in 2006. In their time spent there, they fell in love with the musicians, the people, the music venues, and the lifestyle that Nashville had to offer. With all the said, and even though they weren’t a country act, they thought the best thing and only thing they could do was pack their bags and move to Music City.

The band lived together in a house which has become their fully functional and rentable studio, M.E.G. Productions, in East Nashville. Currently, they are working on their fourth album as well as writing and producing for other artists.

After moving to Nashville, they couldn’t help but fall in love with all the raw talent and wealth of undiscovered acts. MEG put together a production crew from Miami and began filming. In the Summer of 2007 MEG and the boys created and were a part of a documentary entitled, “A Nashville State of Mind.” The inspirations for the film came from the musicians and artists they met when they first arrived in the Music City. As they were working on their music and becoming part of the scene, they became a part of the town, befriended the locals and ex-pats, and a film was born. To critical acclaim, may I add.

With Samantha as their dynamic leader, MEG has gone on to try and conquer self-produced music, as well as videos, documentaries and producing for other artists. Personally, my favorite songs from MEG are “All the Time” (video at http://megmusic.net/31685_65990.asp) and “Giving In” – check the songs out on their MySpace!

Check them out at: www.myspace.com/megmusic
To see a trailer for the film: www.myspace.com/nashvilledocumentary
And, for production services in the Nashville area: www.myspace.com/megproductionsmusic

If you’re in Nashville, see them TONIGHT, DEC. 1 at The Basement! Also, in Goodlettsville, TN, on Dec. 10, at Dougie Ray’s.

What exactly is “Soul Punk” you ask? Kitana describes Sister Anne’s special sound as a potent mix of punk rock, a lil’ melodic metal, and rounded out with the soul that comes naturally when your singer grew up in the high-energy gospel church.

Kitana began her singing career in her church choir. When she was in high school she joined an all-female acapella group, and her confidence in her vocal ability grew. By Senior year she was studying opera voice! In college, Kitana studied costume design in the Theater program, but she also took a song class which she took in order to get more comfortable with holding a microphone to sing. After college, Kitana joined the non-defunct funk rock band The I-Crisis. It was through her experience with I-Crisis that Kitana realized she needed to work on her stage presence. A love of live band karaoke helped with this, and after some very fortunate events involving trolling the internet and convincing friends to get involved, Sister Anne was born!

Sister Anne takes its name straight from those most infamous of Detroit ‘60s bad-boys, the MC5. But this ain’t no retro act. Because just as the ‘Five channeled the spirit of Chuck Berry and Coltrane before them, Sister Anne taps into all things punk, rock, and soul—a Tina Turner scream here, a Black Sabbath bassline there, a little bit of James Brown and a whole lotta Iggy and the Stooges—and stuffs the whole mess into its sparkling 21st-century blender. The result is something at once familiar and brand spankin’ new— a frantic, panting, female soul-punk monster that grabs Garage Rock by the scruff of its skinny white neck and shoves it, face first, back into the sweaty rhythm-and-blues murk from whence it sprang.

RRR: Tell me about your first show with I-Crisis.

K.A.: Our first show was at CBs and it totally sucked. We were all new to the whole band thing and I was pretty scared. There were a few shows after that where I was not very comfortable being in the front and I was not the best performer. It was only when my guitarist, Soul Product, told me that his grandparents, after watching a taped performance thought I was boring and stiff on stage that I had to get my ass in gear. For the rest of our two years in existence, I eventually got my shit together and stopped being scared to do my thing.

RRR: Hahaha! It must have been hard being called “boring and stiff” by the elderly… So? What to do?

K.A.: When I noticed the I-Crisis wasn’t going anywhere, I decided to find another group of people who wanted the same things I did. Not necessarily looking for fame, but a group of people that wanted to write good songs, perform them, and work hard to find out where we could go. I was looking through ads on Craigslist of people wanting singers and came upon an ad that bassist and creator Leon Chase, had put up in which he was looking for a crazy, soulful, Tina‘esque singer, and I immediately responded. Leon came to Arlene’s live band karaoke to hear and see what I could do, and he seemed to dig it, as he brought out guitarist Michelle Primeaux and then 2nd bassist Sherry Dana (Dana later parted because of scheduling conflicts) in an effort to coax them onboard. Then all that was left was convincing drummer Joseph Duarte, who at the time, was a drummer for the Hank’s Saloon karaoke band. I came out there and did some Rage, and some Tina, and some Zeppelin and that was all he seemed to need to get into the band.

RRR: And, voila! A band is formed…

K.A.: This is the group of people I have dreamed of playing with. They are all incredibly talented, and incredibly dedicated and motivated. We write amazing songs together, and on the shows are infectious and energetic. When people come to our shows, they get a lot of fun and a sexy sweat soaked rock experience.

RRR: What influences your onstage persona?

K.A.: I am sexually influenced performance wise, but I don’t use it as a gimmick, the talent of the band is there, and my vocals are strong and they are there too… I am an extremely sexual being; my first job in NYC was managing a sex toy shop for crying out loud! I like to wear minimal clothing (booty shorts, latex, vinyl, catsuits), because singing and performing is a very physical experience. I am all over the place! I’m on the stage, off the stage, humping random people in the audience, dancing with the audience – they’re the best! The audience always knows how to have fun, and they’re not afraid to dance!

RRR: Pet peeves about the industry?

K.A.: It can be as annoying for women in rock to be told ‘That is awesome, a girl that rocks!’ by guys who would’ve never thought we could, as it is to be a black woman in rock. There are many of us out there; we’ve been there! We are some of the pioneers of rock! When people tell me, ‘That’s amazing! A black woman singing rock music!” – I know they mean to compliment, but it can be annoying. The same thing happens to black men, but they are able to find mainstream success at least, i.e. Sevendust, Living Colour. With the rise of more black rock groups, or more groups featuring black front people, I’m hoping that people will stop seeing the women, or the color. After all, rock IS black music, it is derived from the blues. Listen to early Sabbath, and ALL of Zeppelin and most of the Stones and Beatles. Most bands will admit to being influenced. The Stones named themselves after a Muddy Waters tune!

RRR: So, do you try to downplay the female element in your band?

K.A.: Here’s where I’ll sound like a hypocrite. When you read the Sister Anne bio, we are very honest about people noticing the woman guitarist, and the black woman singer. But hey, whatever works to get you noticed! If that’s all that people are gonna see, we might as well make it work for us so that we can get the bodies on the floor and have ‘em coming back for more! Hell yeah! You like that rhyme?

We at the Rock and Roll Report DO like that rhyme, Kitana. LONG LIVE SISTER ANNE!

All our New York people should go check them out at The Studio at Webster Hall on November 11th, 2009!

I’m your new editor, Allegra. Listen up, people: ROCK AND ROLL IS HERE TO STAY, and I’ll tell you what – WOMEN own it!

Our October Triple R Girl of 2009 is Camille Escobedo. She’s not only the front woman of Beretta76; she’s also the songwriter/guitarist/glue that brings the band together.

They rock. Imagine an amalgamation of garage/punk/rock/sex + awesome, and there you have it. Camille is our Triple R Girl because she’s talented, gorgeous, and knows how to make it happen. She and her band are on their way, and we hope our interview with her will inspire other women to ROCK.

We, at the Rock and Roll Report, are THRILLED to have had some one on one time with Camille, and here’s what happened:

RRR: How did you segue from classical training to rocking stage presence?

CE: Initially, my goal was to study voice, to study music and come away with very strong vocal technique. As I left music school I realized I was less interested in pursuing a career in teaching, higher education, Music Theater, or go the wedding band route and that I was more interested in singing original material from my own point of view. This of course led me to write music/lyrics and to pick up the guitar for the first time (a late bloomer in that respect). It’s safe to say that my style and point of view came out intrinsically rock.

RRR: What’s the Philly rock scene like? Are there lots of local rock groups featuring women?

CE: I absolutely love the Philly rock scene. There are more than a handful of women performing in rock groups in Philadelphia which makes for a great sense of community. I think the best part about that is that there is a very diverse cross section of women instrumentalists in Philadelphia. In fact Beretta76’s newest member is bassist Liz Dalberth, she’s a great musician, very knowledgeable and a veteran of the Philly rock scene – we are very fortunate to have her playing with us. And I have to say, it’s quite nice having another female in the band. It’s always been me and the guys – which ain’t so bad either, but it’s a refreshing change.

RRR: I saw that the band formed in 2002. What gave birth to Beretta76?

CE: I formed the band with Pete Rydberg after he had agreed to demo a small portion of songs that I had written. I wasn’t sure what to do with them so it was a big experiment. I knew I wanted to record them and see how far they would go. Pete and I quickly became very simpatico and he had great ideas for the recordings. At that time I had barely enough material to start a band, so in the very early stages it was just Pete and I cranking out recordings. At that stage one of the recordings was making its rounds in the area and drew some attention from a demo contest we’d won from Jane Magazine. Not soon after, I remember getting gig inquiries from local promoters for this band that consisted of just the two of us. The beginnings of a band were certainly there and it was initially intended, but at some point it became the chicken and the egg. I think that what was a recording project quickly transformed into something else in a matter of a year and we both thought it best to find a drummer and a bass player and to finally form what would become Beretta76.

RRR: Do you find being a woman has advantages in rock music? Disadvantages?

CE: I have to be honest in saying that this question does come up a lot in interviews and I feel like I can never give a definitive answer. I certainly believe there are more and more very talented women musicians out there that are able to take advantages of opportunities that were in some way or another paved by way of Lita Ford, Chrissie Hynde and Bonnie Rait. I’ve never really felt any disadvantages in being a woman as a rock musician per se but I do have a suspicion that there may still be a stigma attached to the female performer as being perceived as someone who’s chops might be less than a man’s simply because she has boobs and a vagina. I do see the landscape changing however and I think I would eventually like to see women in bands or all women bands be seen or promoted more as simply a great band and less as a novelty.

RRR: What do you have to say to women who are looking to form their own bands?

CE: Write good material and they will come. That having a point of view and making sure to stand your ground is really REALLY important. Also, take advantage of the network of musicians around you and ask questions. If you don’t already, go to shows, go to shows, go to shows and get to know the players. Most importantly be confident and completely FEARLESS.

“Debra from Devi has a compelling voice—a mix of Sheryl Crow and PJ Harvey—while her guitar playing reminds us of the incomparable Jimi Hendrix.” – Metal Hammer (Italy)

“A ferocious guitar-driven power trio equally adept at sprawling psychedelic jams and terse, haunting rockers.” – Lucid Culture

Devi is a rock trio from Hoboken NJ, led by a woman NYC blog Lucid Culture calls “one of the great guitar players of our time.” This is “an utterly bad-ass power trio,” says Midwest Record, with “a sense of humor, swagger, blistering guitar chops, looks, and the smarts to fuse niche with mass market.” Italy’s Audiovideofoto magazine adds “something tells us we are witnessing the birth of a rock star.”

Devi (“Davey) is Sanskrit for The Goddess—nature in all her forms, including sound. Debra co-produced the band’s debut album, Get Free, which is digitally distributed by Redeye USA and starting to get airplay on college and AAA radio. After getting rave reviews in Italy, Get Free was featured on the iTunes Italy homepage for 2 weeks in June.

Devi roped some talented friends into the Get Free sessions, including keyboardist Rob Clores (Black Crowes, Blues Traveler), jazz clarinetist Perry Robinson, sarod player & singer Wynne Paris (Krishna Das), Michael W. Dean (Bomb), and Wiser Time vocalist Carmen Sclafani.

“Get Free is about the longing for love and the longing for God and the crazy things we pursue, from drugs to sex to relationships, to try to appease those longings,” says singer/guitarist Debra, a Jivamukti yoga practitioner. “All our efforts to escape from being human help us evolve,” she adds, laughing, “whether we like it or not!”

Live, Debra loves to stretch out and jam with bassist Keith Mannino (who was in Black Market Radio with Chris Cornell’s brother Peter) and drummer John Hummel (Black Market Radio and Amfibian). The band adds album guests to the mix whenever possible. Wynne Paris joined Devi onstage at the NAMM show this year and Clores sits in on their NYC shows when he’s in town. As Lucid Culture says “you never know where this band’s adventurous jams will take you…”

Debra is another perfect embodiment of what we are trying to do with the Triple R Girl feature in demonstrating that women can rock with the best of them, any time, any day. Rock and Roll may have been a male dominated preserve in the past but that quirk of history is fast changing to everyone’s relief!

BAND
Debra – vocals/guitars
John Hummel – drums, percussion (Amfibian, Black Market Radio)
Keith Maninno – bass (Black Market Radio)

You can get more info on Debra and Devi (and some free downloads!) at www.devi-rock.com and make sure you check out the Rock and Roll Report Podcasts # 53 and 54! Get Free is available digitally from iTunes, eMusic, Napster etc. Or buy the album at CD Baby by clicking on the CD below.

Fair point. Nobody has put more nickels in the jukebox, baby(!), than Brijitte West.

Born and raised in Nooo York, Brijitte raised the flag for rock ‘n’ roll, and still flies it now. NY scenester, and alumni of De-Generation et al, Brijitte paid her dues and then some.

When NY Loose burst onto the scene as an “overnight sensation” (yeah right – after a slew of self-produced singles and sometimes thankless slogs in dirty clubs) back in 1996, she became the pinup gal for gutter rock fans with discerning taste, but she was always much, much more. Insightful lyrics, commanding stage presence and one of the greatest and instantly recognizable voices in rock, for starters.

NY Loose disintegrated in a mire of managerial hoo-hah that would have had the writers of the Sopranos dismissing the saga as “too much” , after touring with Marilyn Manson, Reverend Horton Heat, the Ramones and many more…

After the “Whiskeytown if Lucinda Williams jammed” alt-country-rock stylings of San Dusky, Brijitte kinda “dropped out” (maaan) for a few years…

But now she’s back, with a killer band and ten freaking scorchers of songs, one featuring Jesse Malin in a duet with Brij. All Killer, no filler.

Brijitte West and the Desperate Hopefulls will be released on CD and limited edition LP this summer.

Upon leaving her native Louisiana she embarked on four national tours, singing and dancing with an exuberant performance troupe. Having also spent time studying acting in New York City, she found her way to LA where she was accepted into both the Lee Strasberg Academy and the world famous Groundlings, a comedy improv school where fellow alumni include Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon.

2007 saw Valenti’s attention focus on her recording career as creator and singer of the alternative pop band Fuji Minx. Affectionately described by one reviewer as “David Bowies Vagina”, Fuji Minx’s debut album “Users, Cheaters, Theaters’” – released in 2008 – was quickly heralded as Album Of The Year by Bullz-Eye Magazine and earned the band a number one spot on the IAC and Cashbox Magazine Indie Charts, a position which they held for over a year.

Valenti is also the founder and CEO of Grow Vision, a multimedia design company creating everything from websites to music videos and documentaries. Clients have included Disney, Atlantic Records, Geffen, Interscope and artists include Ashlee Simpson, Motley Crue, Drowning Pool and Kara DioGuardi.

As a self proclaimed recovering Catholic, Valenti is a proponent of the open mind and free thinking world. Her ‘Masturbating Catholic’ blog is a collection of her social, political, sexual and psychological thoughts, and her next project is an erotic art photography book which encompasses this ethic and features her as the subject.

Whether being the body model for Tinkerbell on the bodies of Alaskan Airways jets, the lead in Buckcherry’s “Too Drunk…” Music Video or commanding the stage with one of her many musical projects, Greta Valenti always approaches everything she does with verve, enthusiasm and a little bit of deviant humor.

They play honest, raw, straight-up rock with poetic hillbilly angst. Brace yourself for the sophomore LP from STARK—Put It To Your Head. 10 tracks that are harder, more punked out and fun, but still feature Ford’s haunting vocals with bitingly funny lyrics that tug at your heart. It’s dark comedy and punked out country blues all rolled into one sexy package. With it’s new line-up, the band promises more great, hard rock and have already been writing for a new studio recording. Also, a new music video for “OH NO!” shot in Coney Island, NY has been released.

STARK makes purgatory fun by sleazing up the NYC rock scene, embracing their bad luck and traumatizing people everywhere they go! STARK blasted onto the NYC scene in 2003 with tunes reminiscent of CBGB’s circa 1978. In 2004, the band released its debut CD The Curse, instantly making fans out of big players in the NYC rock and roll scene and beyond from Genya Ravan to Lenny Kaye. Since then, the line-up has changed a bit, but STARK has still been playing, recording and touring often. STARK has a steadily growing support base, indie-level industry interest, raving album and live show reviews, international radio, internet and television play, songs in films, and distribution and licensing in the U.S. and abroad.

Self-released CD’s: Put It To Your Head (LP), The Curse (LP), and Live at CMJ (EP). STARK’s song “Slut” is on the compilation disc The Morgue The Merrier (Poptown Records). “18 Again” will be featured on the upcoming Goldie’s Garage, Volume 1 compilation disc (Wicked Cool Records). “Disturbed” is on the Summer Sampler CD of Bubblegum Slut in the UK. “I Pay (Man In The Moon)” is to be placed on a new G’nR tribute CD to be released in 2008 (Versailles Records). “OH NO!” is included on the Women Of Rock compilation CD (MJR Films, August 2008). “This Day” was featured on the CD Sampler of Under The Radar Magazine in September 2008.

STARK’s new CD ‘Put It To Your Head’ is available for download at http://www.digstation.com/stark
Industry insiders say Jennifer Rose is high energy modern rock with classic rock influences. Her vocal style is most often described as powerhouse.

Born in San Diego to a military father and a go-go dancing mother, Jennifer made her career choice early when, at the age of 3, she darted away in a crowded mall and was found standing on a bench singing to a crowd. Such outbursts are not uncommon. Flash forward to age 16 when Jennifer joined her first band as lead vocalist with band mates that had to sneak her into bars to perform. This was the beginning of a professional career that involved classical training as well as countless live performances and studio recordings involving rock, pop, blues, jazz, classical, gospel and even light opera, plus a variety of cover and tribute bands as well as musical theatre productions throughout southern California and parts of Canada.

In 2008, Jennifer parted from her previous bands and began work on a demo CD of original rock songs with attitude. With a fist full of lyrics in one hand and her life’s savings in the other, Jennifer went in search of a producer who understood her desire to bring back a modern, strong female-rocker figure influenced by the high energy rock of the 80’s with a touch of the glam. As destiny would have it, a random contact from musician/producer Kevin Patrick, the keyboardist for Blondie (2001-2008), offered a unique chance for collaboration. Within a few weeks, Jennifer was on a plane from Los Angeles, California, to the recording studio of Kevin Patrick in Manhattan, New York.
The 4-song demo, released April, 2008, is receiving very positive reaction from fans and industry people around the globe. Jennifer’s songs have played on 30+ radio stations around the USA, Canada and across Europe, plus numerous radio interviews. Six additional songs will be available early January, 2009.

Jennifer Rose has been the “Clear Channel NEW! Featured Artist” on STAR 98.7 FM, 104.3 MyFM and KISS 102.7 FM in Los Angeles. Jennifer has also been a Featured Artist on Smokin Tunz Radio, Incite Rockit ‘n Mix and Jambonie.com.

Jennifer is also the Video DJ for the monthly internet TV show MetalHeadRadioTV at www.MetalHeadRadio.com/mhrtv.html

Emerging to stardom from a once working class lifestyle under the grey skies of Ohio, Christine Varian is a classic example of how hard work, dedication, musical talent, street smarts and a whole lot of sex appeal can quickly pull a person from the shadows into the spotlight.

Christine was discovered by long time music scene kingpin and axe-man Brian Gerbetz; she states “I was singing karaoke in a ‘hole-in-the-wall’ bar one night, when Brian was asked by a friend to come scout me out.” Astonished by Christine’s voice, dance moves and humble personality, Brian decided to give her a shot at being lead singer for the quickly uprising band “Ardor” (www.ardorband.com, myspace.com/ardorband)

Christine started writing with Ardor in the fall of ’08, and has been with the band ever since. “Being the front-woman for such a powerful and respected metal band is an awesome experience, and a huge responsibility. I often find myself having to not only perform my best vocally, but also maintain my physical and mental composure in public. It’s not easy being a hot rock chick, ha ha.” says Christine.

Christine’s voice has been called “The Christina Aguilera of Heavy Metal” and her looks have been compared to “Avril Lavigne, except with more edge and sex-appeal”. One thing is for sure though, no one in the celebrity world, or the metal music scene can hold a candle to Christine’s original style and uniqueness.

In her spare time, when she is not tearing up the microphone with her impeccable screams and radiating vocals, Christine has been heading up several modeling projects; posing for some of the nation’s top photographers. She says she plans to dominate every media outlet she can someday, which opens up the possibilities of acting in movies, being involved in politics, starring on network television and more. “Being the lead singer of a renown metal band is such a privilege, but I want more… I want to rule the world!” she says.

“Rule the world”; pretty strong words for a girl who was once a waitress in a small town Applebee’s, however, Christine has proved her worthiness more than most; she has managed to stay humble and sympathetic throughout the years, often providing a sort of ‘vehicle’ for her friends and fans. Christine’s stage performances, radio interviews and public speeches have all included strong messages of hope and perseverance that everyone who is listening, can relate to. Truly, her words have been motivating and she is well on her way to being the next spokesperson for a generation of striving teens and an inspiration for upcoming, struggling singer/songwriters.

As for Christine’s band mates, they all seem to be pleased with her efforts to help push the band to greater heights since her induction in the early fall of ’08. Stephen Meier (bass guitar) stated, “I don’t know what we’d do without her, she really makes this band and this music the best it could ever be! Without her, we’d only be half way up the music scene ladder.” Brian Gerbetz (guitar) went on to say “Christine’s presence in this band is unmistakable, she truly makes every note pop and shine the way it should. We are really lucky to have found her.”
