CD Review – “Of Mind And Matter” by Little Man

March 2, 2009 by Matheson Kamin

We’ve all heard the expression “Good things come in small packages”. When you’re talking about music, you must be talking about the Minnesota band Little Man. Little Man was named after the fictional character of Clayton Chester Logan in the novel by Mildred D. Taylor called Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.

The name also refers to the frontman of the band Chris Perricelli who happens to be 5’2”. When it comes to Perricelli, the expression lets you believe that inside the man that is small in statue is a musician who is larger than life, especially where talent is concerned.
Perricelli put the band together while he was in college. That was back in the 1990s. However, the current version of the band was put together in 2006. Today’s version of Little Man includes Chris Perricelli – vocals, guitar, Sean Sauder – Drums, and Andy Ferkinhoff – Bass.

Chris Perricelli has taken his band of Little Man and created a band that is centered on creating music that is both somewhat spiritual and also somewhat retro, as Perricelli lists several musicians and bands that have helped shape rock music over the years a few decades ago as influences. Some of the people on the list include people like the Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Kinks, Fleetwood Mac, and T. Rex. You can even throw in some of the bands over in England right now that are creating new music today. With these people as influences, there is a noticeable difference between Perricelli’s music and that of today’s artists who are getting loads of plays on today’s over-commercialized radio airwaves.

Chris Perricelli and the rest of Little Man have just released a new album that is named “Of Mind and Matter”. The band released the album on Eclectone Records. “Of Mind and Matter” contains Perricelli’s songwriting style, which also includes his mind-expanding lyrics about living with a higher consciousness, with songs like “Tarots and Arrows,” Talisman,” and Seal of Secrecy,” and “Don’t Pray To Fantasy”. The songs are flavored with a lot of style from music of the past. The album would be perfect for people who like music that is from the 60s or 70s.

For no other reason, check out “Of Mind And Matter” by Little Man to hear the guitar playing of award-winning guitarist Chris Perricelli. The band has had their moments of popularity as well, as they were part of SXSW in 2007. The band also won Top Album of the Year several times for previous releases.
