If you try to define the genre of powerpop you would have to look at some of the masters of the form. From the Who, the Beatles and the Easybeats on through Badfinger and Big Star with the Shoes, Plimsouls, Matthew Sweet and Sloan pulling up the rear, the powerpop “formula” if you will combines buzzsaw electric guitar, catchy-sweet pop hooks and multi-voiced harmonies. Easier said than done, good powerpop is deceptive in its simplicity but therein lies its charm. Mini creates good powerpop. I had a chance to listen to some demos of Mini as they prepare for the release of their first album (tentatively called “Table for Four”) and I knew I was in for a treat when I heard “Undone” which combines “Paperback Writer” circa Paul McCartney bass lines with hand claps galore and wonderfully powerful bright guitars. Since the band consists of multiple vocalists they have an incredible rock and roll range that adds variety to their musical depth. No downloads are available yet but I will update you all as soon as some become available. A real powerpop, no make that rock and roll treat for the ears, Mini will soon be making major noise. Good stuff.
