CD Review: Renegade Ride – Dream Machine

dream machineThis album is yet another excellent example of an independent rocking band recording an inspiring and timeless classic album, once again, the more I hear this, the more I want. This is not greed, I just know what I like and man I do like Renegade Ride so so much. Once again they join the infinite rank of inspiring and as yet unsung heroes in the progression of hard edged full on Rock’n’Roll.

The album starts with ’Stars’, a great flowing song with real strong choruses that lead you into the colour and feel of the album, changing tempo and gaining weight close to the end of the song.

’Dream Machine’ is next, flowing harmonies and ripping riffage with just enough feeling of angst to give this track a truly great edge. The angst never reaches anger, just at the turning point it harmonises and flows joyfully towards the next heavyweight crescendo.

Rock and Roll Report Podcast #60 – Sometimes A Girl

bathing babeThis week’s Rock and Roll Report Podcast is definitely made to be played loud! I apologize for the lateness of it’s release but various technical gremlins, work commitments and power failures resulted in me having to put off recording for a few days.

This week’s podcast features a number of bands and artists that I have never played before and they are all amazing. Despite the fact that these bands and artists are either unsigned or are on smaller indie labels they really would have no problem being slotted in on a commercial rock radio playlist in my opinion so if you like what you hear, request your local rock station to play these artists!

Rock and Roll Report Podcast #58- Crawl Back In

hotchick-apple-computer 300Welcome to Rock and Roll Report Podcast #58, part of the Rock and Roll Report’s regular mission to seek out and promote amazing rock and roll from all over the globe and yep!, all these bands are either unsigned or on small indie record labels. But does that truly make any difference to the quality of the music? Not in the least as I think you will testify if you have ever listened to an episode of the podcast before.

This week’s episode really runs the gamut of rock and roll styles, from the U2-tinged sound of the latest by Exile Parade to the raw rock and roll of The Pinx to the retro sound of The Cardinals on to the powerful heavy rock of Oscape, we have all the bases covered.

Rock and Roll Report Podcast #56 – A Cheaper Kind of Love

hilton and spearsAfter taking a week away from audio to get Rock and Roll Report TV launched I am back on board the Rock and Roll Report Podcast jet plane and buzzing over some amazing rock and roll. None of the bands played on this podcast have ever been played before on the podcast and my usual reaction prevailed as I listened to these tracks namely “Why have I not heard this stuff before?”

I tried to mix it up this week with a nice dose of the heavy, the punky and the power poppy because that to me is what is most fun about rock and roll, the sheer variety of the music. I hope you like that aspect of rock and roll and if you don’t, just wait a few minutes and something else will come on. Who knows, you might even like something you would never have given the time of day to before? If that happens, let me know!

If you enjoy the podcast please consider subscribing and rating and commenting on the show in the iTunes Podcast Directory. The more comments and positive ratings the podcast gets, the higher up it goes in the directory and the more exposure these bands get to potential fans so it is a win win situation for all involved.

Drinking With Gene Simmons – My Adventures at Canadian Music Week

(We would like to welcome musician, publicist and writer Dave Chinner to the Rock and Roll Report team as our new Toronto-based correspondent. And what better way to start things off then throwing him into the midst of the colossal Canadian Music Week and see what gives!)

Ok, maybe the title is a bit of a stretch… Ok it’s a huge stretch, considering Gene doesn’t even drink, and even if he did, he probably wouldn’t drink with the likes of me. But I decided to roll with it, since I needed a smoking headline for this, my first Rock and Roll Report piece, and I personally think its way more catchy then say…. “Drinking in the same hotel as Gene Simmons sort of…..”

Now I find myself sitting in front of my laptop for the last hour, as the Canadian Music Week dust settles, trying to decide which piece of wisdom to share with the RRR world. In the last week, I’ve done everything from appearances on reggae radio, to 3am Chinese food with CTV comics, to award shows including the Indies and Canadian Radio Music Awards. I’ve met everyone from Dave Foley from The Kids in the Hall, to bassist Tommy Mac of Hedley (honorable mention to Gene of course). The week was a whirlwind of activity, and everywhere I went could have likely produced enough “wow factor” to justify an article, but what I found most strange, is that no one thing really blew my mind. There’s a significant possibility that I’m just an asshole, and I’m certainly not implying that there was nothing good to see. I just think, it’s silly when the biggest star of the week, is such that would encourage forty-something’s with mullets to paint their faces and head to the Royal York Hotel. Nothing against KISS or their fans, but let’s face it, nobody can hog a spotlight like Mr. Gene Simmons, and for a festival showcasing 45 venues, I would have liked to see more media attention given to the independent artists who desperately need it. So rather then writing yet another “OMG Gene Simmons” piece, I’m going get real with you here, and share with you some of my observations as a writer, publicist and musician.

Rock and Roll Report Podcast #39 – Pass Me the Blisterine!

After an absence of one week due to some technical difficulties the Rock and Roll Report Podcast is back with some great rock and roll meant to be played loud!

This week due to a major failure in my counting abilities I only played 9 songs instead of 10. Chalk it up to some over indulgence in egg nog…
