Exile on Main Street has always been one of my “Desert Island Discs” and there is not much that the band’s current output can do to change this. The raunchy, decadent period of 1971-72 has always been a favourite of mine and certainly Robert Greenfield’s opus “A Journey Through America with the Rolling Stones” captures the era much better than the infamous “Cocksucker Blues” film. Rolling Stone magazine has a fine collection of Exile-era phtographs on their site along with excerpts from a new book by Greenfield on the making of the album which sounds like a must have for Stones fanatics.
To get you in the mood, here are the Rolling Stones rehearsing the classic “Loving Cup” in Montreux in 1972. And look, not a backup singer in sight!
