To podcast or not to podcast? or How I stopped worrying and volunteered with my local community radio station.

I have been mulling the idea of doing an audio companion to The Rock and Roll Report for some time now. My first inclination was to do a podcast but complicated music licensing issues have put the kibosh on that idea for the time being. The next idea was to start a streaming radio station via something like Live 365. I like that idea but the costs involved make it problematic at this time so I have put that on the backburner. Since I love non-commercial community radio I suddenly realized that the solution to my need for a radio fix was right there on my FM dial: I have become a member of my local community radio station CKUT and my first orientation session (mmmm, music library!) starts this week. I have no idea when or even if I will ever get on the air but really, that is not my primary motivation. My motivation is to get involved in a great community resource while helping out the best I can. Do I hope to get on the air someday? Sure I do but right now I think it best that I learn the ropes, pay my dues (both literally and figuratively) and leave the rest up to the radio Gods. As things progress I’ll keep you up to date on what I’m up to but at the very least I hope that this journey will inspire some of you to sign up as a volunteer at your local community radio station, something that will hopefully enrich both your life and those that listen. Should be fun.
