PCWorld.com – Will CDs and DVDs Disappear?

According to this article in PC World “Will CDs and DVDs Disappear?” Some analyst thinks that CDs and DVDs are bound to be replaced by music downloads and streaming video. I certainly hope not as my CD player has never required a patch and then a hard reboot. And my turntable? Well it didn’t soak up beer too well but aside from a new needle every couple of years it still works! I am a music luddite! (as I type this into my PC with an MP3 playing in the background. Oh well. Progress, gotta love it….to death).

Back to School

In honour of my son’s first day in Grade 3 (oh and he is thrilled about that!), I bring you a link to one of the coolest libraries ever, The Rock and Roll Library! Yes it’s true, it’s legit and teachers can even use it to introduce rock and roll into their classrooms (this could be the fourth ‘R, Reading, wRiting, aRithmetic and Rock and Roll). Hey, that would make even me look forward to class! “Class, today we will be debating whether The Ramones or the New York Dolls influenced the Sex Pistols and the birth of Punk, so please get out your headphones and load “I Wanna Be Sedated” from the class MP3 server”.

Revenge of the Geeks

Remember when being a geek was a bad thing? How you use to look down on them in high school and push them around the hallways? Well, don’t look back because it is these very same geeks (and trust me, they consider the name a compliment) that are creating the technology that will either enhance your music listening experience or make it so mind numbingling complicated that you will pine for the days of your vinyl albums. If P2P, DRM, DECSS are all gibberish to you, head on over to Slashdot, proudly proclaimed as “News for Nerds” where you will find all the hot technology stories of the day debated and dissected ad infinitum. You might not understand much at first and I realize this isn’t exactly rock and roll but eventually you’ll figure things out because after all, with the way music technology is evolving, you won’t have a choice.
