Congratulations, the sophomore album from MGMT, won’t be out officially until April 13, but the sprawling, mutating LP is already floating around out on the interwebs. So the NY psych-pop duo has taken steps to make sure you don’t hear a shitty low-bitrate version of it. Over on the duo’s website, they’ve posted the entire album as a free stream, and you don’t even have to enter an email address or anything.
Along with the album itself, they’ve posted this message: “Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us. We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn‘t make sense to anyone but us.” Columbia Records, always wanting to actually sell albums and spoiling it for the rest of us. (Just kidding!)
In other MGMT news, Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi stopped by BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge this weekend to play a session. One of the two songs he played was a cover of MGMT‘s “Time to Pretend”, rendered as a sad, florid piano lament.
