Music Downloads Circa 2004?

The New York Times features an interesting article on the possible future of music downloading in 2004 (subscription required). The idea of being able to download rare and unreleased music is an excellent idea that bands like Pearl Jam, Phish and The Tragically Hip are already doing. These rare downloads should be a bonus incentive available only if you purchase a band’s CD (much like The Hip do with The Hip Club) so at least fans are encouraged to buy legit releases. Deep down though, I still like those huge, admitedly expensive but very cool box sets that are everywhere. I like my music in a somewhat tangible form. Call me old fashioned and possibly gullible but I won’t give up my Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968 box set for anything.
