Odds and Sods: Rock Out at Denny’s, Ernie Ball’s Battle of the Bands at Warped ‘08, 1st Annual Sunset Strip Music Festival and Sixx A.M.’s Playboy Debut

This edition of “Odds and Sods” covers everything from greasy fast food, a great Battle of the Bands competition that involves both fans and unsigned bands, rocking out on the Sunset Strip and porn music videos. What a great way to start the weekend!

  • dennys.jpgAmerican fast food restaurant chain Denny’s has found an interesting way to get involved in the music biz and support up and coming bands. They have just launched their Denny’s All Nighter site with their “Adopt a Band” feature and I have to say it is pretty original. According to an article in Billboard

Participating touring bands can eat at Denny’s for free at any time, and have their pictures, bios, tour dates posted, and one song streamed from Denny’s microsite dennysallnighter.com. In return, the featured band will be expected to visit three Denny’s a month, mention their Denny’s visits on their Web sites and post pictures of themselves at the Denny’s.

The initial bands are EndeverafteR (Razor and Tie), Forever The Sickest Kids (Universal Motown Records), Foxy Shazam (New Weathermen/Ferret Music), Saving Abel (Virgin Records), Switches (Interscope) and Take The Crown (Rise Records). Every two months six new group of bands will be added to the site.

In addition, four higher profile bands — Taking Back Sunday (Warner Bros. Records), Eagles of Death Metal (Rekords Rekords / Downtown), The All-American Rejects (Interscope), and Plain White T’s (Hollywood Records) — will create Rock Star Menus. Rock Star Menus will consist of a dish concocted by one of the bands. The first one, developed by Taking Back Sunday, will be available nationally in August.

If you want to get involved, they have been combing SonicBids with the help of Filter Magazine to pick out bands that “have a huge online following and who will work hard for us.” Sounds kind of cool but bands, watch out for the cholesterol and arteries!

  • If you are going to see this year’s Warped tour, you will want to head over to the Ernie Ball’s Battle of the Bands stage for some pretty cool unsigned bands. If you happen to be in a band, head over to their site and sign up ASAP to see if you have got what it takes to make their stage. It will be up to fans voting on their website to decide. This is the 12th edition so this isn’t a fly by night deal.
  • The first annual Sunset Strip Music Festival is taking place from June 26-28 in the City of West Hollywood. It is intended to promote, preserve and perpetuate the Sunset Strip Music Experience, which thrives today in clubs and theaters like the Roxy, Whisky A-Go-Go, the House of Blues, Viper Room, Key Club and the Cat Club — all of which are uniting for the festival. A collaboration with the Sunset Strip Business Association, Sunset Strip music venue owners/operators and the City of West Hollywood, it is expected to draw 9,000 consumers, fans, VIPs, auction winners and music industry leaders. • sixxam.jpgI know Sixx A.M., Nikki Sixx’s side-band from Motley Crue is not exactly indie or unsigned (but the rock babes sure do love Nikki!) but I thought you might want to check out the nude video of “Pray For Me” that is currently available exclusively at Playboy.Com. Rock and porn….the two just keep getting closer and closer together….
