Rock and Roll Report Podcast #62 – So Glad You Dig Me

cute girl smilingFor those expecting a podcast last week I apologize but as I did Rock and Roll Report Radio on October 12th I just couldn’t get a podcast together in time for release on Wednesday.

On this week’s podcast I turn things on their head a bit and feature what I consider 3 very distinct styles of music in 3 very distinct sets. And I went against my initial impulse to start of the show with the harder stuff to keep things interesting!

I have just finished reading “Rick Rubin: In the Studio” and it is a pretty fascinating book as Rubin’s taste in music know no boundaries. From hip hop to hard rock, metal to Pop, Red Hot Chili Peppers to Johnny Cash, the guy understands that music is about the song and the emotion it conveys. A highly recommended read and a good rule of thumb to go by. Don’t get caught up in genres in niches, focus on the song and let the rest take care of itself which is kind of what I did this week. I love all this songs and at first listen you might find them to be quite different from each other but to me that doesn’t matter. Each song caught my ear and I like each one regardless of whatever genre YOU think they belong in!

Artists and Bands

The Rock and Roll Report Band Of The Week is “Ashtray”

ashtray front line 300The compelling blend of Ashtray’s melodic hard rock fused with straight edge metal has brought a new era to the creative force of their musical composition. Originating from Quebec City and now residing in Montreal.

Ashtray have taken over the underground alternative / metal scene and displayed a loyal following after releasing their debut album “End This” in 2007.

Gaining momentum for their signature sound of pulsating guitar crunches, hammering drums and catchy vocals. Ashtray are breaking the walls down one brick at a time with their upcoming and self produced EP “Sessions”.

Be ready for Ashtray!

Shaz : What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of that name?

Ashtray: We are Ashtray and the story behind the name is…well it`s quite long story but I`ll try to make it short. After a band meeting, we had come up with a bunch of name on a list, but all of them were pretty shitty (such as Gain, Direct Thumb, Probe, The She male was Pregnant…just to name a few), but we were going over them and arguing over them while sipping a few drinks and everybody was going in a opposite direction. But at that time Dom, our singer, was going out with a girl from the US and we wanted to teach her the word ashtray in French (because we are francophone) cause she was asking for it all the time. So after repeating it a million times Ian (guitar player) got a vision about the band being named Ashtray…not because of its meaning but basically how it`s pronounced, he said : “ Imagined a big crowd screaming ASH TRAY ASH TRAY ASH TRAY” and we all said….That would be totally insane!!.  So that`s the story behind it but I did spare a few undisclosed details, in fact the whole process took the whole evening!!!

Rock and Roll Report Podcast #56 – A Cheaper Kind of Love

hilton and spearsAfter taking a week away from audio to get Rock and Roll Report TV launched I am back on board the Rock and Roll Report Podcast jet plane and buzzing over some amazing rock and roll. None of the bands played on this podcast have ever been played before on the podcast and my usual reaction prevailed as I listened to these tracks namely “Why have I not heard this stuff before?”

I tried to mix it up this week with a nice dose of the heavy, the punky and the power poppy because that to me is what is most fun about rock and roll, the sheer variety of the music. I hope you like that aspect of rock and roll and if you don’t, just wait a few minutes and something else will come on. Who knows, you might even like something you would never have given the time of day to before? If that happens, let me know!

Rock Radio 2.0

Rock and Roll Report Radio Playlist for July 13, 2009 Featuring Ashtray

ashtrayOn July 13th I had special guests Ashtray in the studio with me for Rock and Roll Report Radio on the Drastic Plastic Program on CKUT 90.3 FM. We had a blast talking rock and roll, playing live in Montreal and beyond and what it takes to be in a band in 2009. And to top it all off the band played a few live tunes in the studio.

Always remember that you can go to the CKUT archives at and select the Drastic Plastic Program for July 13th and download or listen to the show as a stream and enjoy it if you missed it live.

The band has graciously provided me with 5 CDs to give away so if you are interested, email me at and tell me where each band member is from. You will have to listen to the show but it is in there. Make sure you mark “Ashtray” in the subject line of your email.

In addition to having Ashtray in the studio I played a number of other cool bands.

This is what I played:

  1. Mission to Rock by Cockpit
  2. Fear by Silent Treatment
  3. Wasterride by Mad Temple
  4. Mix It Up by My Machine
  5. RustBucket by One Bad Son
  6. Heal My Eyes by Ashtray
  7. Intoxicated by Ashtray
  8. Behind the Mirror by Ashtray (live)
  9. New Beginning by Ashtray (live)
  10. Rise by Ashtray
