The Record Label Spotlight is On: Only Lovers Left Alive

Only Lovers Left Alive
is an interesting English record label that as far as I can tell has only one CD currently available but what a cool CD it is! Sex: Too Fast to Live Too Young to Die is a compilation CD featuring tracks that were on the jukebox at Sex, the Kings Road fetish-gear boutique that Malcolm McLaren ran at the time that he was unleashing the Sex Pistols on the world. What is so cool and yet might be surprising to some is that the songs on that jukebox were some of the great “garage” bands of the ‘60s. Bands like The Troggs, The Flamin’ Groovies and The Creation all feature on this great CD that only goes to show that despite a lot of the posturing by bands like the Sex Pistols and the Damned, they weren’t rebelling against rock and roll so much as they were rebelling against rock and roll bloat. The stuff on this CD truly deserves to be called “punk” since in reality, a lot of this stuff (as Lenny Kaye has pointed out) had the attitude that bands like The Sex Pistols and The Ramones aped in the early-mid ‘70s. What goes around comes around in the world of rock and roll.
