The Rock and Roll Report Band Of The Week is..Toys In The Forest

Toys in the ForestFormed in 2005, Toys in the Forest is at the crossroad of blues and Rock and roll , mixed with some heavy metal influences. ” The band was formed to perform live, we are a live act and many venues book us because we do the show, the rock n roll show” says Max. (lead vocals and guitar).

The songs are all about life, parties, sex and rock n roll, but we also explore a dark side with slow tempos and heavy riffs. We have a few songs about life after death such as “Pain and Fear” or “sympathy for a dead man”.

We love rock n roll music, we have have always been big fans of bands like iron maiden , Thin Lizzy or Motorhead. After a few changes in the line up, the band has spent the last two years on the road to promote their second EP “Sex , Toys and Rock n roll”, playing in bars, lesbian clubs or rock festivals during their Hypnotic tour .

The band is all about rock n roll, we can play almost anywhere as long as we can plug in ! Toys in the Forest are back in the studios to write and record  their third opus due in january 2010. In the meantime, they are still promoting their rock n roll on Tvs, radios and Live gigs !!

Today I would like thank Toys In The Forest  for taking some time out to do this for us their Fans

Shaz: Welcome guys and before we start I just wanted to say You really do RAWK!!!! Wicked tunz’s guys

Maxx: Hello Shaz!!!  Thanks a lot for your warm welcome, we’re so glad you like our sound !!

Shaz: What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of that name?

Maxx: I found the name after a late night party in Paris, drinking wine and having fun until six in the morning. I had to record a new song in the studio the next morning and when I was about to sing  the first thing that came to my mind was “Toys in The Forest”, I was still a bit drunk and I thought the name was good. A few days later a friend of mine Listened to the song, and she said ” well I like the song very much but the title track is very strange and sexual ” so I thought , oh yeah that’s a perfect image of what the band is , so we decided to use it as the name of the band TOYS IN THE FOREST.

Shaz: Could you please list the name, and respective instrument of each band member.

Maxx: We have Peter F on the drums, Toff on the Bass, 3/4 on the guitar and myself Maxx Flees on vocals and lead guitar

Shaz: What genre of music do you consider your work to be and who are your major influences?

Maxx: We started this band to play rock n roll at 100 per cent. The main influences are probably  rock n roll and hard rock bands from the seventies and the eighties such as : Motorhead, Thin Lizzy , Black Sabbath , Iron Maiden, Rory Gallagher to name a few of them.

Shaz: How did you guys meet and what was it that inspired you to become the Band you are today….

Maxx: We met two years ago in Belgium, I was looking for musicians who were eager to perform live and play rock n roll. The inspiration about the band is to offer a rock n roll show that makes you shake your booty and have fun ! We wanted to write songs that deal with the good time, the parties, sex and rock n roll. As long as we can perform live and see people coming to our shows, then we are a rock n roll  band , that’s my inspiration and that’s what motivates the band today ! Lets rock n roll

Shaz: Are you a member of any music organizations?

Maxx: We have our organization called the “HOUSE OF ROCK”, its gathers the whole crew working with us: roadies, guitar techs, webmaster, photographers, beer drinkers (lol), We also spend a lot of time in that house of rock , its our HQ, the place to live and to party !

Shaz: What can you tell me about your instruments? (i.e., Are you subject to brand loyalty or will you play with whatever’s available? What made you choose the instruments you have now? Was it cost or was it a style/model/brand/color preference?

Maxx: I play my Gibson guitars, mostly my SG, probably because of AC/DC , I have also a nice Les Paul that I use on some tracks, I like red or black guitars.
3/4: I like to play on my Gibson Lespaul, being a big thin Lizzy fan !
Toff: I tried several basses in germany and the best one I picked was a black warwick , the sound is heavy and fantastic ! I also use a Fender jazz bass as a spare one from times to time!

Shaz: Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

Maxx: When the band was based in Paris we played in great venues such as : La cigale, Palais des Congrés but also lots of Clubs ! Then in Belgium we did a lot of Clubs and Festivals too ! The best souvenir is probably when people sing along the songs with us and have a good time ! the least favorite venues well …we try to avoid them (laughs)

Shaz: Who is it that sits down and writes your songs? Or is this a joint effort….

Maxx: I usually like to work on my 8 tracks to write the songs and then work with the band. Now, for the next album we decided to work differently, it is more and more a joint effort, we jam a lot , work on the riffs and record all the rehearsals to pick the best bits and save the best parts so as to write better songs and have a better live set !

Shaz: Could you briefly describe the music-making process?

Maxx: Most of the time, I find the idea of the song on a acoustic guitar, then when I get the general idea , Toff listens to the track and if the song is good we work on it at the rehearsal. I write the lyrics first and the music comes along.

Shaz: How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?

Maxx: I reckon that the music evolved from Blues rock to Hard rock n roll, probably because we spent more time on stage during the last two years than in the studio. Our songs go straight to the point now,

Shaz: What has been your biggest challenge as a band?

Maxx: I guess the challenge is to keep on playing this dirty rock n roll and put it on bigger stages

Shaz: What are your Touring and recording plans….

Maxx:We keep ourselves busy, we keep on playing gigs in Belgium in France and we try to find more festivals for 2010. Of course we would love to play in the U.K  ! We are now writing the new songs for the third record. We hope that it will be ready in January 2010. I was told yesterday that we will be one of the opening act of Blaze Bayley ( ex Iron Maiden singer) when he comes in Belgium next July so it sounds great !!

Shaz: What is life like as a Musician in the age of the Internet?

Maxx: Well , I think Internet has changed everything in the life of a musician ! I spend a lot of my time in front of the computer to promote the band , find gigs and that’s how we found you too, so its kinda great , its a fantastic way to virtually tour around the world too! !

Shaz: Whom and what Inspires you guys Musically and otherwise….

Maxx: Life inspires me ! Musically rock n roll is my main inspiration ! The music and The life style

Shaz:  And last of all guys….What is the most way out thing that has ever happened to yous while playing a gig or on the road…….

Maxx: I remember a gig in a famous venue in Paris called La Boule Noire. During the last songs we asked people to join us on stage, about 50 people were there with us on that big stage! While i was playing my final solo, I felt a hand touching my ass, I looked behind and it was my girlfriend right behind me and..she was kissing another girl (laugh). There was also a gig in Liege (Belgium) in a Lesbian Club called the Big Boss !! We did the show , the girls were wild! we were invited at the after party and we were offered alcohol all night long ! We got so drunk that night that we couldn’t leave the venue. We couldn’t drive home But we had a blast !! I think its the first time that the whole band and crew was drunk on the same night ! it was awesome !!

Shaz: Is there anything else you would like to add that we your fans would be keen to know about?

Maxx: We wanna thank you for your support, thanks for spreading the name of the band to your friends , join us on myspace (, if you like the song you can download them via the legal platforms !! keep in touch !! and most of all Stay rock n roll !!!

Thank you Maxx  this has been so awesome and it always rocks to catch up with you……..
Have an awesome week guys and rock for us all……

hugs Shaz
