Two brothers, one great band – Meet Writer.

Once in a while, there is a great gig that really makes a difference in your life. This is how the Writer show in Montreal was for me; their entire performance was extremely uplifting and refreshing, like a nice warm shower…of emotion! The evening started with an amazing interview with the two multi-talented and friendly brothers that form the band: Andy and James Ralph. They began their show with the track ‘Miss Mermaid,’ which was even more brilliant live than their recorded version. Their live performance confirmed that when two such talented people collaborate, there is no need to add more members to the band.

Their music put me in such a great mood, that after their gig, I decided to take a long walk home and it ended up being one of the best nights I’ve had in a long time. Q) How did you come up with the name Writer?

A) It started as a joke on people wanting to be called by professional titles such as Doctor, Writer etc. We also liked and chose that name because it’s short and simple.

Q) What’s the best part of being in a band with your brother?

A) We flow off each other very well, and it is easy not to offend one another.

Q) And what’s the worst part of being in a band with your brother?

A) We are stuck together (laughs), but it really works for the best!

Q) In some of your songs, you refer to people’s names – are they based on real life or are they fiction?

A) All the tracks are based on real people; they are all stories about our close friends, and about things that have happened to us recently. For instance, the song ‘Family Dinner’ is about our friends that organized a large dinner party one time when we got back from touring.

Q) What are your main sources of inspiration?

A) Our family, friends, life and traveling.

Q) What were your intentions with this new 7-inch?

A) Our intentions were to get to do a tour so that our sound could be heard outside of San Diego. We have a full-length album that is ready [and] before launching it, we wanted to tour to promote some of our tracks.

Q) What keeps you going as a band?

A) Just to be able to play loud music for different audiences.

Q) What motivates you to do music?

A) Because we are only a two piece, and we like to make a lot of noise, for us it’s always motivating to figure out how to create new sound effects.

Q) What’s the one word that best sums up your band?

A) GhettoTech.
